Very Cheap Red Gracilaria Macro Algae

I'm certainly no expert on gracilaria. I've started to keep gracilaria parvispora in my refugium. Here are some links to information about gracilaria:

G. parvispora: http://www.hawaii.edu/reefalgae/invasive_algae/rhodo/gracilaria_parvispora.htm
G. tikvahiae: http://www.hawaii.edu/reefalgae/invasive_algae/rhodo/gracilaria_tikvahiae.htm

The above links do suggest that G. tikvahiae is hardier since it appears to be invasive. The links also suggest that G. parvispora has failed in commercial tank mariculture.

Actually the branching pattern of the algae identify it's spieces, not the hardiness alone. The hardiness is depends on wether it has been tested. There are variations within spieces and they are called strains.

More CDOM from Gracilaria?

More CDOM from Gracilaria?

I replaced my chaetomorpha with gracilaria parvispora in my refugium and in my 10-gallon quarantine tank. I noticed that the water in the quarantine tank has taken on a brownish tint. This is not noticeable in my refugium & main system because of the carbon filtration there.

Has anyone noticed any chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) exuded by gracilaria parvispora?

I've never had chaetomorpha in my quarantine tank (which is why there is a caulerpa infestation in my main system). Has anyone noticed CDOM exuded by chaetomorpha?

Edit:
Sorry -- CDOM is just a fancy term for yellowing or color compounds that can be seen in the water column.

Gracilaria in general are not like the cheato. They are like carrot on land and the cheato are like grass. They need lotta Food which are mostly are byproducts of fish and corals and their poops. Gracilaria contains lotta nitritions so u can not just jam them in a tight sterile space and expect them to do well. Some of the strains of gracilaria require more light and some don't, and some are hardier than the other as I said. The strain u bought might not be too hardy. U can try to put some trace minerals and adjust the light a little in that tank. Another thing is that your isolation tank might be too sterile where nothing can grow. My cousin have some of the gracilia that I gave him in his nano tank and never have any problem so yeh I think u should try a little adjustments. =)

How you doing man.
I just got back using this site and starting to meet familiar people aready, Sweet.
I got some algae from you long ago, and they are growing pretty good and healthy Red now man. My fish hecka love those, especially my blue HIPPO and the yellow tang.
Good luck with your business.

Hi there
Thank You so much hehe.
Yeh I tried to post a link to my ebay and craigslist auction but I guess it wasn't a good idea. =)
As for my business, it has been very good, people loved the algae so my partner and I are trying to expand our macro tank. Winter is coming so it means higher electric bills on our greenhouse hehe. Dam it, wish I live in Hawaii or Florida it would be great. Hopefully we can keep that low price for long though =(.
Thanks again for your opinion.
