My overflow sounds like a toilet flushing. Following is a crude sketch of my system. I tried sticking a tube down the hole in the top of the drain pipe, and it didn't seem to help. Should the hole maybe be larger? PS - I'm not an artist ;-)
I can't believe nobody else out there either has other suggestions, or concurs with Pat. I've made the hole bigger several times, and will drill it again this weekend. Hopefully it will help.
Your set up looks like ours. I found most of the noise comes from airbubbles in the hose coming down from the overflow. I put in filter socks and that gets rid of the excess bubbles and really muffles the sound.
Believe me, once your tank has been up and running for a while, you won't even notice the noise unless it is dead quiet in the room.
1) Are you using 1" ID tubing, if so the pump should be < about 600 gph. If tubing is smaller that's not good.
2) Have you tried a shorter piece of flexible hose so that it's not underwater or at least not as far as the diagram makes it look? Just something to try.
I had similar noise even with the Durso. I attached a long piece of hose to the hole and coiled it up inside the overflow box with the opening end high up as not to ever suck water from the overflow by accident. Noise gone.
