I definately would not recommend getting a large bird cage as their home. Yes they indeed need a large area for a cage since they are very active critters.
But you see, the big bird cages are designed for larger birds, such as lorikeets, macaws, and cockatoos. The problem is, as the cage gets bigger, the spacing inbetween the bars gets bigger as well.
Sugar gliders, especially young, are quite small, and could squeeze through the larger bird cages with ease. And then once they get bigger you run the risk of them not being able to squeeze all the way through and get their head stuck between the bars. I would definately recommend getting a specialized cage for them, even if it does cost a little more, they usually come with locks. My friend lost his glider because he forgot to lock the cage and it was able to open it, got out, and the cat got it.
