Very slight diatom starting

It is not brown or unsightly but I was wondering if I should turkey baste the rocks the only problem is I don't have a filter sock right now. So the dust storm will just collect in my sump. Or just leave it and I do have a small clean up crew just let them work on it. Out of all my tanks I set up this is almost like the sand color not brown at all. I took my little dropper used to collect water for samples I used it like a mini turkey Baster on one rock to see what would happen and just blew right off but I only did one small rock then stopped.

Well I posted in the general forum. Someone suggested place a HoB filter so thats what I did and turned the return off and suspended skimming after dinner I will resume normal operation. On a side not will be in Fairview tommorow. The lfs store says paradise corals or something like that. I googled that and found saltwater paradise and it said permanently closed anyone know about this?

Dude slow down. Quit tinkering and leave it be. Never wise to knee jerk react based on one guys post in the general forums. Ask here where we know u and just slow down:) I'm not trying to be insulting, but you're your own worse enemy here. Just go slow and leave it be for a week or three, just watch!!!

+1 Or 6 wait weeks to do anything

+1, do nothing until you just can't anymore. The tiny critters that need to be in balance take a really long time in new tanks. Each time you change something you change the numbers to balance, causing just a bit more chaos extending the out of balance duration (I am very guilty of this in the past). Everything must grow and compete; die off, be eaten, run out of a certain substance or find themselves the limiting agent that curtails into a steady ecosystem balance. You just got to watch it unfold and not poke around to much. I have found that when I want to poke around in my new setup I just go to the pet store and get an easy cheap frag or just nerd out and ask questions (every fish store must hate me:)). Once I get my reefing fix the urge to dork around in my tank isn't as bad.

So after yesterday I'm not putting my hands in the tank unless a astrea snail falls. Right after cycle I did a 50% change. I was planning on doing 15% every two weeks. I even set a reminder so with only one fish. That would put my water change on the 14th and the swap is on the 18th do you think I can afford too push it back a week since I did a big one and not much bioload. Part 2 since it is a new tank and I just added the pods do I need to siphon the sand bed this early when I do the water change or do 1/4th of it or none of it yet.

All joking aside. Test your water tonight or tomorrow. Then repeat in 7 days and see what if any changes might be needed

Don't do anything but watch your tank parameters. If your tank is cycled, your parameters will tell you when to do something.

+1
I am amazed I can go two days without doing anything to my tank. I just love tinkering around. That factor of my personality made nano and smaller reef keeping boarderline frustrating but fun. Any tiny change seemed to reverberate through all of the tank life; so my tinkering nature only worked against me in the long term. I'm not saying you share that trait, but it's pretty common in the hobby and fades as the smaller things become nothing to worry about. To quote one of my favorite authors "don't panic, and always bring a towel." and "thanks for all the fish."

on another note, I'm a 40yo studying for midterms at IHOP wearing sunglasses, flip flops, short shorts and a He-man tank top. take anything I say with that in mind.

January 16 I did a my last water change after a big change to my tank. Since then Ive readjusted my skimmer, working on dialing the calcium reactor in and changed filter socks once a week. Maybe my 1970 excel spreadsheet might help. I have not tested phosphates for a long time, reason being that when I had a magnet contaminate my tank I found a half cup of Gfo monthly keep my reading in check

Since the big change I've added slowly 5 peppermint shrimp, 3 cleaner shrimp, 2 emerald crabs,1 Sally lightfoot crab, 1 brittle star fish and one serpent starfish

I did do a little tinkering moved the powerheads to the upper back glass corners instead of the middle of the back glass. And I still still test for ammonia, nitrites,ph and nitrates. I clean my skimmer cup almost everyday just because I think it works better. There is a few spots of a hairy algae starting on rocks very tiny spots. I don't like it because how much time I spent preparing them but I am just letting them be and I cut my lights back to 6 hours just because no corals other then that all is good

Algae is going away on its own. I have done nothing to it. I am thinking about scraping the rest off of the glass and catching it in a sock. I am looking forward to the day I can put something in other than the turbo snails. They are just not fun to watch.

Dude, that's a nice head of hair!

Ok now it is more then a slight diatom still not like some google image searches. So I noticed my nitrates more elevated then the past few days and i had the 15% water change ready. So I changed it I thought today was a good day to do it with the swap about a week from now then a week after the swap will be a good time for another one. Let me know if that right there sounds like a good plan. Ok part two CUC: 2 red legs,2 cerith,2 astrea,2nassarius,2turbo. When I got them didn't have any diatoms so I didn't get much. Should I add some more and if so what kind? Or let nature do its thing except that snails alway are on the glass and the glass is good for now
