It's not that difficult of a hobby just add water and grab a saltshaker and keep shaking it till it's empty, then add fish 25 at a time per 2 gallons and hope for the best. If you find things are dying just add more Fish and that will stabilize your system.:deadhorse:

Make sure it is iodized salt! one less thing to dose that you dont ever have to test for!

I myself use Rock Salt it's cheaper in Spring..

wow, you said you're almost ready to give up, if after only 24 hours your water is still cloudy and your also inpatient, you may want to give up. This may not be the hobby for you? It's a marathon not a sprint. Oh and turn off your uv during cycle. What are you going to do when you have an algae outbreak? Or parameters out of whack? Or pump failure? I'm just saying there's going to be other things that are more detrimental than the cloudy water that will clear up overtime. Good luck

So I finally got my salt and some rock to start my tank. Filled it up with salt and it mixed together pretty good. I had a bag of live sand lying around and my cat picked a hole on it so I had to use it. My tank looks like someone took a bag of flour and dumped it into it. I'm at the point where I'm just ready to give up. It's ugly and nasty looking and it has not changed in 24 hours. And no I'm not doing water changes cause tht would be a waste of the money I just spent.

Not trying to be a jerk but just an observation...

#1 - You need more space between your tank and the top the fuge.

Why you ask - You will need the extra space to get in there to remove that big bag of pretty white sand you put in the last section. You know the section your return pump is sitting in and looks to be about an inch or sand or so which unfortunately is clouding your water.

#2 Always ask questions, there is no db question. This hobby is trial and error, most of us have made mistakes.

I hate to sound like a jerk, but if you are about to give up after 24 hours because of cloudy water in a brand new tank... This hobby is NOT for you.

If you don't want to do a water change because it is a waste of money... This hobby is NOT for you.

Progress in this hobby takes weeks and months, not minutes and hours... And the only way to learn is through extensive research or costly mistakes.

I have filter socks on the intake and it is collecting the small particles

Are these filter socks or actual socks?

If somebody quit because of a cloudy tank which is normal I can only imagine what would happen once they reach the algae bloom phaze.. new tank syndrome come too soon for this person..

I always rinse the heck out of any sand before it goes into the tank. You could use a sock on a powerhead to help filter it out.
