Visiting Tucson

I will be in town for a job interview on the 23rd and 24th. Is there any LFS that I need to make sure to visit? I am more interested in stores with a good selection of coral.

The three specialty stores in town are Southwest Saltwater, Oasis Tropical Fish, and Majestic SeaLife.

Tropical Kingdom is a pet store with a fair saltwater and coral selection.

If you can make it up to Phoenix, two hours north, they have several stores in the Eastern hub that are easy to get to. These are Pets Inc, About the Reef, Aquarium Arts, and Ocean Art. Further north is Aquatouch. This is a must see store. It employs innovative techniques, has a multizone 800 gallon reef display, is very techy (only store in state that quarantines livestock) and is nationaly recognized.

Thanks Scott, I don't think I will have the time to get to Phoenix. I will be looking at the Tucson area for houses. If I get the job, I will have plenty of time to check out the Phoenix stores. Do you have any insight on the areas of Tucson to avoid? I have a wife and 4 kids from 4-14.

Tucson is an old town with very mixed neighborhoods. So, beautiful homes are often found right next to run-down homes.

In general, central Tucson is where the college and downtown is. Great nightlife, sporting, events, and the college. So young people and rentals are abound.

Not sure what your needs are, or where you are looking for employment, but there are lots of new housing developments around the city. You should not have any problems finding these areas once here.

The extravegant homes are found in the foothills, and around the mountains, which wrap around the city. It is very beautiful here, I'm sure you will enjoy this friendly community. Welcome!

Are you still a Marine?

Right now our housing market is going down fast , if you rent for a bit and wait you will find some really good deals. For sale signs going up all around the city in droves..........I would hold off buying for about 2-3 months unless you find someone desperate.

WITH CHILDREN FROM 4 - 14 YOU MAY WANT TO CONSIDER DISTRICT 16 SCHOOLING. THE AREA SPANS FROM THE NORTH TO THE NORTHEAST. DEPENDING ON WHERE YOUR JOB IS LOCATED, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO FIND A NICE PLACE IN THE FOOTHILLS. I'M SURE THERE ARE SOME REASONABLE DEALS RIGHT NOW.

cerreta- Yes, I am still a Marine! I am an activated Reservist working at MacDill AFB in Tampa now. I get out soon and may get a job with Raytheon there in Tucson. That is the plan anyways. We will see after the interview.

SWSaltwater- It will be probably 2 months before I would start if I get the job.

ADVRESOURCE- North to Northeast, Isn't that where most of the LFS are? LOL My wife said someone told here Vail had the best schools. How is Dist 16 compared to Vail?
I don't have the job yet.

Thank for all your input. It will make it easier to plan this short trip.

Vail does have decent schools, but I hear Foothills is the best, Far from raytheon though and a very costly area. Vail has good deals and one part of raytheon is located near rita ranch (close to vail)

Tucson has nice neighborhoods that are right next to crime ridden ones. You want to avoid any neighborhood that has a 50% or greater rental rate.

I would avoid the neighborhood between 22nd - Golflinks and Wilmot - Alvernon.

The Oracle Rd Corridor from Drachman - Wetmore.

Also, most of the Southwest side of Tucson basically everything southwest of 22nd and Kino that in the City limits.

I live in Rancho Sahuarita and love it, it has a 16 acre lake huge clubhouse/wourkout facility, a water park for the kids (largest private park in AZ) and its about 10mins from Raytheon. The houses here are way affordable and there is so much growth out here it is unbelievable. if your interested I could give you a breakdown on what I paid for my house and how much appreciation I have had since to give you idea of the areas growth. Oh and they just built a new school for the kids that opened at the beginning of the year.

My father just recently retired from Raytheon and I attended Catalina Foothills high-school. It is a wonderful school that gives a extremely high quality education, classes are small, and iit s the safest school in town. I highly recommend it as a school both in quality of education and atmosphere for transitioning into an adult. Welcome... -CHUPA
