vitality of frags

If a frag grows into a colony and a frag is taken from that new colony which now grows into another colony.....

Can this be done infinetely with no loss of vitality?

It depends on the coral. For those species with no senescence, yes it can go on indefinitely. For those that senesce, the clock starts ticking from the time the primary polyp starts growing. Frags made from such a coral will have the same genetic age as the parent colony, so the same amount of life left in them.
