Vodka Dosing - Need powerful skimmer ?

I've read a bit about Vodka dosing, and I've read numerous times that you need a powerful skimmer or it doesn't work well.

Anybody have any experience confirming / busting this statement ?

I would have to agree that a good skimmer is a benefit.

You need a powerfull skimmer because

A When the bacteria multiply, they deplete the tank of oxygen and a powerfull skimmer can help negate that effect.
You can crash your tank if not carefull,

B That when the bacteria die off, you can skim them out.

I had an Octopus NW150 on my tank when I started dosing vodka on a 90G. I upgraded my skimmer to an Octopus Pro 250 and notice a positive change in the colors of my corals and I clean the glass less. Also, the skimmate is darker and the smell is just plain nasty.

Cyano Magnet, well put. Thanks for sharing you're experience.
When I started dosing I was running a SUPER cheap skimmer rated for maybe 65 gallons.
I recently made a new DIY skimmer, rated for probably a 300 gal tank. It has only been running for a little over a week, so I'm sure it is not running at optimum efficiancy yet. We will see if I notice any difference.

dobly_1999, how long after upping you're skimmer did you start to notice a difference?
