Vodka dosing while on vacation

Hi,

I'm currently dosing vodka-sugar-vinegar and am having great results.

I was wondering what people are doing when they go on vacation? I won't have anyone to dose it while we are gone. Should I not worry about it and just restart it at a lower dose when I return? Should I back done the dose 1-2 weeks before vacation in preparation?

What's everyone doing?

I have just stopped dosing sugar in the past with no harmful effects. When you get back, it will be interesting to see where your phosphate & nitrate levels are at. If they have increased significantly, then you may have to increase your dosage a little to get your levels back down. Once they are at where you want them, then I reduce your dosage down to the dosage that you know will maintain them. This will depend a lot on your feeding habits. If you are not going to feed your fish while you are gone, then you may not see any increase. On the other hand, if you have someone feed your fish while you are gone, and this person overfeeds your fish, then you may see the levels increase significantly.

a nice piece of equipment i use: eheim liquidoser

it is a small and rather cheap dosing pump (about 50 euros over here) which allows you to set up to 8 times of dosing a day with always the same amount (1ml). so if you have a maintainance dosage of something smaller than that, it might be your right choice. you can dose all over your lightperiod, so it might make dosing more effective.

ive been using it for 4 months without problems until i knocked mine over into the sump

I think automated systems are wonderful. However, the hobbyist should make sure they have worked out all possible kinks before they leave it unattended. I have seen to many accidents occur from these automated systems, where the hobbyist returns to find his tanks system completely wiped out. Leaving your system in the care of a novice has resulted with the same outcome in many threads I have read.

I dilute my vodka with ro di and either dose it in the top off or take my mag doser off line and replace it with the vodka.
e.g I dilute 200ml of vodaka with 800ml of ro di and the dose 205 ml of mix slowly over the day, I use a grotech doser.

i have to advise you to NOT use the liquidoser

i just knocked over my second unit after just 3 days in operation and could punch myself for wasting so much money... will get a regular dosing pump now, as i could have already with the money ive spent

I use a SpectraPure LiterMeter III for my automated dosing. I don't just use it for vacations but for everyday use.
