Vodka dosing

Where am I?

I have the instructions on what measurements and how much to dose. However what stuff is people using to does? Where are some people buying the equipment to dose. or better yet if you have pics please post them, I am trying to get an idea and right now drawing blanks.

dosing pumps or just a syringe or shot glass or whatever it takes to get the right amount in the tank when needed.

I to use a shot glass to fill with proper doses and then dump it all. I turn my skimmer off for a few hours and feed the sps. 3 hours later I turn the skimmer back on.

ok I seem to get the point now, I was getting confused with how to dose I was reading more on drip then just dump. Then I seem a pic of someone with what looked like an IV drip setup. But I can live with the dumbing part.

So I guess it's recommended to turn off skimmer when doing this? Should this be done daily until I start to get undue table nitrates then level off, or weekly? If I read it correctly its daily I think

Also I thought about just using vinegar dosing instead of vodka, is there any difference in the methods except the dosage is higher for vinager then vodka?

Sorry about all the questions I just don't feel comfortable starting something new when I have so much tired into my tank.

Although these questions have been answered quite a few times, here is the cliff note version:

Vinegar dosing in large quantities can cause an immediate drop in PH. You will want to spread ou your vinegar dosing a bit, unless you only need a small ammount of dosing in the first place to keep your tank in check.

If you use kalkwasser, vinegar is a great addition. They play very well with each other (vinegar helps with kalk saturation and protects from large PH spikes. Kalk keeps vinegar from dropping PH too much).

You will find that some people, including myself, prefer vinegar over vodka. As vodka seems to "cause" more frequent outbreaks of cyano. Vinegar dosing doesnt seem to have this same end affect.

Personally, I would not turn off my skimmer while carbon dosing. By nature, carbon dosing starves your tank of oxygen. Skimmers help alleviate this issue. IMO, there will be plenty of carbon to go around. I dont feel that the brief period of time that a skimmer being turned off is going to do enough to be considered beneficial.

No matter what form of carbon dosing you choose, the better option will always be to dose over longer periods of time instead of one large dose. But, if you want to keep it nice and simple, one large dose will work just fine as well.

I am no expert on this, I vodka dosed my tank for about a month, not sure if it worked or if it was also b/c of my 5-10 gal weekly water changes. I no longer vodka dose I just am religious with my water quality and changes.

I agree that small bits over long periods of time would be better than one giant dose. split the daily does up into half's and does in the morning and night maybe?

Ok instead of dosing vodka I did vinager instead. I am on Day 5 today, I havent dosed today yet (I will tonight), however I am starting to get brown looking algea on my sand bed now. Its almost like my tank is doing a cycle again. I started with a dose of 15ml per 100 gals, my water volume is roughly 240 gal. I am now going to move up to 30ml per 100gal today, that would give me roughly 3.3ml per gal. That doesnt seem right, it seems like to much vinager per gal. Who has experiance with this that can inform me if I am doing this right?

I dont have experience with vinegar, but I agree that it seems a lot. Are you testing parameters as you are doing this? I would keep a small does going for a while then test and adjust as needed.

When I use to vodka dose, i did small amounts each day probably under what was really needed. But I also then did a waterchange each week. Are you changing water as well?

So I went down to correct the dose today I put 10ml in, and noticed Ll my corals are fully opened like I have never seen, everything looks good except the brown patch's on the sand bed.

I started to notice some color change in one of my corals. It used to be dark red with very little green. Now just 5 days into vinager dosing it is starting to turn green with red eyes. The first pic was taken roughly a week before I started and the 2nd pic was taken 2 days ago.

Im dosing 72ml per 110g presently and will likely go up to 80 by time im done. Your numbers seem fine to me.

Did you notice a drop in nitrates with your vinegar dosing? My nitrates are high and I'm debating vodka or vinegar dosing..

I tested my water today after just 3 weeks of dosing vinager and my nitrates 20ppm to 5 ppm. I am only at 20ml every week. Also I do just add the vinager to the kalc bottle.

When you dose vinegar with kalk, do you add the vinegar directly to a kalk reactor?

Generally when you dose vinegar and kalk you do so from a still reservoir. If you add it to a reactor you will have to do so daily. You may be able to add it to the ATO reservoir feeding the reactor but it can encourage bacterial growth in the reservoir so it usually isn't recommended.

Keep in mind vodka is 8 times stronger than vinegar. A 5ml dose of vodka is the equivalent of 40ml of vinegar. That's why the ml/g seems so much higher. Your still dosing the same amount of carbon though.

Vodka lends itself to one time dosing because it reacts more slowly than vinegar and spreads the PH drop out over a longer period.
