Vodka dosing

What is the hype with dosing vodka in an sps tank? What are the benefits? What is the downside? What is the proper dosing?

The theory is, vodka provides the neccessary carbon source for bacteria that consumes nitrate and phosphate, but my take is that the corals get tipsy and feel better. HTH.
