vol_reefer's pre-sales

Hi all,

I've finally rounded up photos of some colonies I have available for fragging - several posts with pictures and prices will follow.

I'd prefer to do all my sales pre-arranged because I don't have enough room in my tank to house any unsold frags after the swap, plus I don't want to hack things up unnecessarily. Except where noted below, my default option will be to provide freshly-cut, unmounted frags because that's how I prefer to get them from others. However, if anyone prefers, I can mount their frags to ceramic plugs. I will cut frags from the parent colonies to fill orders until I don't think I should cut any more, and if there are more requests than frags, I will distribute them in the order the requests came in. Some of these colonies aren't so large yet, so I won't be cutting more than one or two frags from those.

Aside from a few annoying aipstasia anemones, my tank is free of pests so far as I know. Full disclosure: my tang did have a minor case of ich about 5 or 6 weeks ago, but on a metronidazole-infused diet, it seems to have gone away now. In any case, neither the aipstasia nor ich should be any kind of risk factor with fresh-cut frags. Several ETRC members have frags from my tank and can vouch for their health. One of the LFSs also sells frags from my tank.

All photos were taken under 20K lighting (2x400W plus 1x250W HQI on a 5' long tank), upgraded from 14Ks about three weeks ago. I've done no post-processing of the photos other than cropping, rotating, and re-sizing - nothing that would affect the colors. Some of the photos were taken with a Canon Eos 40D using either a zoom or macro lens, set for auto white balance. The others were taken with a Canon SD800 using its "underwater" setting, which I think does compensate a bit for the blue in the lights, but not excessively. Some of the SD800 shots were taken with the camera in the tank using an underwater housing, and a few others were taken through an Ogles mesoscope for extreme close-ups. The sequence the frags are presented in below goes roughly from left to right across the tank.

Here's a full tank shot to give the overview.

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/jemoersch/ETRCSwap08/photo#5208318347118259554"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/jemoersch/SEep8R0iLWI/AAAAAAAAA_Y/MqI8LJAzq1A/s800/FTS.jpg" /></a>

There are many colonies in my tank that I'm not specifically listing for frag sales, but if you see something you really want you can always ask - if nothing else, I can put you on my list for when it grows out more.

I'm interested in trades, but because my tank space is so limited I have to be really selective. If you've got some good stuff and see something you want from me, drop me a PM.

Bright green acropora florida. Original source: DFS maricultured. Grows in a massive/branching habit w/ very thick base. Under my new 20K lights, the tips are starting to develop a hint of blue that they didn't have before. Glows under blue moonlights or actinics. $20 for ~3/4"

Larry Jackson purple tip. Original source: Chattanooga frag swap. Grows very quickly at both the tips and base - can overrun other corals. Branches fuse into a cone-shaped base, with the top forming a flat table. Needs high light to keep the strong purple coloration. Individual stalks are separated and thin, so I'll offer three frags, about 3/4" - 1" long ea., mounted to a frag plug. $20/plug.

Montipora hispida. Original source: Upscales. Grows relatively quickly and tends to overrun neighbors - give it space. Does well in a wide range of lighting intensities. Growth form is variable, from encrusting to plating to small, thick towers. Very nice contrast between army green base and bright green polyps. ~1 x 1" frag for $15. I also have a larger (I think roughly 1x2" frag - I can check if someone is interested) already encrusted to some rubble that I'll sell for $30.

kmagyar's Incredible Hulk acro. Original source: Keith Magyar on RC. Note that this is probably *not* the same "Incredible Hulk" that is commonly drooled over in the SPS forum - Magyar has posted that it is just a coincidence that he had given his colony the same name (I think he named his first, actually). Has an interesting growth form - kind of looks like Sideshow Bob's dreadlocks in green to me. It's mostly a light green, but up close the polyps on the growth tips are actually purple. $20 for 3/4"-1"

Blue-and-green-tipped acro. Original source: Solomon Islands maricultured from Dr. Mac's. Not sure of the species - could be a. kimbeensis? Bushy growth form. Really cool coloration on the tips (see the mesoscope shot below). I'm listing this one tentatively because I have a feeling it may be hard to frag - the branches grow pretty close together and I don't know for sure how easily I'll be able to get in there to cut pieces. Price will depend on size of the frag, somewhere from $15-25. Understand that I might not be able to fill any requests on this one if I decide I can't frag it without doing a lot of destruction!

Orange montipora capricornis. Original source: Chattanooga frag swap. Fast grower, good beginner coral. Can handle a wide range of light, although I've burned a small section of mine recently from my light upgrade. Any frags I cut for buyers will be from the opposite site of the ~14" diameter colony - should be perfectly healthy. Approx. size 1" x 1", $15.

Green acropora austera (Miyagi tort). Original source: Solomon Islands maricultured from Dr. Mac's. Somewhat slow grower, but interesting growth form. This colony has changed colors a few times in my tank over ~2.5 years. When I got it originally, it was close to the present color, maybe more of a pale mint green. Then it went through a cream-colored phase that wasn't so exciting, then a beautiful translucent ice blue, and finally to the color seen in the photos. Up close, the polyps still have that pretty ice blue color. ~3/4"-1" frag for $20.

Orange montipora digitata. Original source: Upscales. A relatively common coral, but one of my favorites because of its bold color. Fast grower - encrusts quickly - have to be careful about the encrustation covering nearby corals. $15 for 3/4"-1" frag. I also have a large (maybe 2.5"?) multibranched frag/colony of this that can be seen on the left side of my FTS on the wall of the tank (it's on a magnetic frag plug), which I'd let go for $30.

Green montipora digitata. Original source: DFS aquacultured. Very primary, lush green - nice complement to the orange digi. Grows almost as fast as the orange, but doesn't seem to encrust around the base nearly as much (the orange really lays down a carpet of encrustation). $15 for 3/4-1" frag.

Green montipora capricornis. Original source: Can't remember - one of the regional swaps, I think. This is just an ordinary green cap, pretty but nothing remarkable. The photo shows a bit of a purple rim, but I can't claim I see that by eye - I had to shoot the photo through the acrylic at an angle, so maybe that's what caused it. This cap is a relatively fast grower. I only have one ~3/4 x 3/4" piece that I'm willing to break off until it grows out a little more. $10 for that piece.

Pink-tipped acropora abrotanoides. Original source: DFS Diver's Den maricultured. Nice growth form in that the branches are quite thick. The color has left me underwhelmed, though - it came in (around a year ago) pinker than it is now, and I have not been able to regain that color, although it isn't getting any worse now. Others on RC have had similar problems with this species. The tips are still a nice pink, but the body is sort of tan/brown. Encrusts like crazy around the base. One caveat on this is it may be hard to cut frags, being so thick-branched, so the offering is tentative. $15 for 3/4-1" frag.

Green encrusting/towering montipora (sp?). Original source: Frag from The Coral Reef. Very interesting growth form - mostly it encrusts and plates, but it also makes these cool thin alien-looking spires. The edges transition from green to a nice sky blue (which doesn't show up great in the photos). Fast grower - will encrust neighbors pretty quickly. $15 for ~1 x 1" frag.

Purple plating montipora (cap?). Original source: The Coral Reef, but I think they got it from RC member cee. Looks like the Idaho Grape to me, but I can't demonstrate that lineage (maybe cee can comment). I don't want to cut into my main colony yet, but I do have a mounted and encrusted ~3/4" diameter frag that I'll let go for $15.

Tyree LE Ponape Torch acro. Original source: Atlantis Aquarium. Fast grower. The color is a nice purple, but I haven't been able to get the level of color saturation on my colony that Atlantis shows on their website. "Hodag's" montipora confusa. Original source: DFS aquacultured. Encrusting with lobate towers. Pretty "highlighter green" color. I just have one "tower" of this that I would be willing to frag off right now - it's the lobe on the right side overhanging my pink lemonade frag. About 1/2-3/4" tall for $15.

Hot pink pocillopora. Original source: Upscales. Very intense pink color that seems to be hard to capture on camera - these photos make it look purple, but it's really more purplish-pink. I almost lost my colony of this when the original 1/2" frag I had broke off the rubble it had encrusted and fell into a dark hole where it died off while I was on a trip. All that was left was a monolayer encrustation on the rubble about half the size of a dime. But after months of sitting there, it started to spark, and now I have a nice small colony of it. Frags will probably be on the short side because the branches aren't so long yet. ~1/2" for $20.
