Volcano club

My new reef volcano. It even spews lava, so cool. I didn't even have to wait for it to be built, just ordered and shipped. I'll post pics when I get it up and running.

Thats what i keep wondering.

Joe (NYVP) says he had the first., and i've seen about 2 or 3 others that claim they had the first one, including Volcano1 ... and energy. lol

well to clear things up it goes something like this......
i built this big ugly thing long ago to test needle wheels designs. energy had seen that and asked me if i would turn that test tank into a skimmer and let him try it out on his big tank. he had a very high nitrate load in his system and was trying everything to lower the nitrates in the tank. so big ugly was born. this was the very first "dart needle wheel" skimmer i had ever made. that was not a volcano skimmer though. the very first volcano skimmer was owned by NYVP that was the only " volcano" ever built with 100% acrylic parts. all the other volcanos were built with pvc and acrylic parts. that volcano skimmer that NYVP owned was sold to a guy in Ill who changed his name to volcano1.
we have since replaced "big ugly" with a volcano becasue that was not really ment ot be a skimmer. it was supose to be just for testing puropses. he really needed a better deisgned skimmer that that one. lol it was really ugly! i have thought about cuting up big ugly but it is so homely looking that i just cant find the guts to put it out of its missery.

Didn't mean to take any honors away from Energy. He had the first large prototype, be happy to change my sig in his honor. :)

They look great but I am not a big fan of thumb screws, especially now that twist offs are so easily made now.

Every time I see thumb screws it brings me back to the days of my MRC 3...my fingers still hurt. :)

I was wondering where Joe's skimmer went to .. and now that you said it, i remember both you & joe telling me that it went to Ill.

The neck/cup is a twist off on the volcanos. I'm not sure where else you'd want a twist off?!

I have called Scott many times about this he said he is thinking about it please all who are intrested chime in so Scott knows there is a market for him here.

Very Nice. Is that an overflow box that he built for you? Scott said mine should be done in a couple of weeks. It was partially built earlier this week.

Yes, Scott built the box as well. Works like a charm. The skimmer is already pulling some gunk from the water and it's only been on for a couple days. Once it get's broken in and add more load in the future it should make a fine addition.

Very nice, any updates? I dumped about 5 cups of old skimate into my new skimmer when I first got it. Then I spread this around the inside of the skimmer body and wha-la it was broke in. Took about an 5 minutes tp rpoduce skimmate and keep going from there.

Not really. I've been i contact with Spazz and he feels there was a mistake in the venturi that was installed. He is sending me a different one to see about more bubble production which we both feel is not where it should be. Once that is installed I will post more pictures.

This is my Volcano with my 2 year old standing along side for comparison.

How does 190 watts sound? That is what this skimmer is running off from. It also only uses one pump. That means less stuff to mess with! The main body of this bad boy holds 117 gallons!

I had a different skimmer which was basically similar to the Deltec or H & S model, It held 12 gallons and ran off from 360 watts. Their is no way it kept up with this.

Tom-Knowing Spazz I am sure he will gladly take care of you. That is just the way he is.

Has anyone seen the new Volcano media reactors? He is using a medical grade valve to keep the media out of the mixing chamber. I saw his prototype and was blown away. I have never seen any thing like it in person. Needless to say I asked to be placed first on the list for that bad boy when it comes out.

Check out the sump behind my son. Spazz built that as well- 327 gallons of it. The cool thing about that is it has an integrated isolation chamber to keep the overflow water from mixing in with the clean water before it's pushed back into the tank. That means all of the water gets filtered before going into the system. That was another one of his ideas.

Chrissreef - the Orca Reeflo 250 is a great skimmer. I believe it is very similar to the Volcano 1240 unit which is the smallest one Spazz makes. The difference is he only rates that skimmer for 300 gallon tanks and they rate theirs up to 800 gallons. I don't get that. I would never use that skimmer on anything bigger than a 300 gallon tank.

I also believe they use very similar if not the same pump. I also think he throws away their needlewheel and makes his own. I think he does this because his needlewheel makes finer bubbles.

If I'm not mistaken I believe Spazz's Volcano holds more water in the main body as well. Something like 2-3 gallons more which means it processes and cleans 10-20% more water at any one time. I know his is 40" tall and theirs is about 32".

I think he uses thicker, higher strength, acrylic and they use the cheaper stuff. After all his are custom made by hand where theirs are made in a factory that is probably oversees somewhere and they need to keep construction costs down somehow. I know he used the best materials available in my skimmer and my neighbors who has a 1240 unit running his 250 gallon system. He said the quality was much better than the mass produced ones he was looking at for his tank. And he's kind of picky about stuff like that.

I can walk across the street and take a closer look at it at any time if your interested in more info but I think those are the main differences off the top of my head.
