Volitan and frondosa

I love when he turns this colour.

Have you noticed a certain time of day or some other thing that affects when he turns that color? Is it when he is hungry? Full? Scared? Threatening?

PJs. :-)

But since I've put him in this tan,k he's gotten the white patches on him all the time where he use to be solid red. I like this better.

Probably the rock, because that's where he is sleeping. This is a QT/grow out tank... it has no colours in there besides base-looking rock. Kindda boring.

Korrine,

No two organisms on the planet have the same species name.
"brasiliensis" is just one half of the species name. Each species name consists of the latin Genus and a Latin Specific Epitaph. "Scorpaena brasiliensis" is the species name while "S. brasiliensis" is an abbreviation that should only be used following the full, proper species name in a publication. If that publication has more than one species with the same abbreviation then they need to be spelled out in full. So, the problem isn't with the names but with people not knowing how they are used!

Totally not lecturing you, just letting you know that biologists actually have a really good naming system, if people follow the rules.

I know. When I asked what it was the response was S. Brasiliensis and I had no idea what the genus was since I haven't been looking into this group very long. I googled it and was surprised at what kind of animals had the same species name. That's all :)

Fantastic photos Renee!!!

The baby in his grow out tank. He's being stubborn about being converted to frozen. He's close though.... oh so close. But if he doesn't convert in th enext couple of tries, I'm going to have to ease back and feed him live for awhile to fatten him back up for another go. But I will win.... he knows it too but is holding out until the bitter end.

He'll soon be do a molt and has some diatoms on him at the moment. Never underestimate the power of macro. We removed 3 heavily fed fish from this tank and his bioload doesn't even come close to them. There was never any signs of nutrient excess in there. Before we put him in, we removed the macro to make sure he wouldn't turn green. The rock was purple and we thought it would be a better influence. Holy Nuisance Algae Batman! The removed macro was keeping this bad boy in place. I'm lucky he's not turning brown!

His spots are becoming whiter.

Looking great!! Man I wish mine was more on the frondosa side... Oh well I guess I just have to buy another one so mine has a friend.
I'm also having trouble converting mine to frozen, he's a young one like yours, I wonder if that has something to do with it. I've just been feeding him domino damsels, the closest he's come is when I put a live one on the stick but as soon as he realized it was on the stick he walked away, then then damsel fell off the stick and he gulped him right up... It's confusing me why he won't take to it.
A friend was asking me what are the white spots at the base of the pectoral fins but I had no clue, any ideas?

i was a witness...hopefully, this one has turned the corner. it's kinda funny how such a small thing is so huge in all of our worlds as pred keepers. interestingly enuff, this fish seems to prefer stalking its prey almost at substrate level, which is kinda bass-ackwards for a Rhino.

Renee is relentless, and has several little moves and teases once the fish get to the point where they "track" the food item with their eyes. when you see her in action, you realize that the fish don't have a snowball's chance in h3ll of refusing for too long.
