Vortech Foam Guards - Are You Using Them?

I'm currently using VorTech pumps on 2 of my tanks. I have 2 MP10s on one and 2 MP40s on another. I'm using the foam guards but questioning if I want to keep up that process. They seem to suck in any remaining food after feed mode stops and it just sits in there until I clean them. Even if I clean them a few times a week, whenever I remove them there is usually food / debris that falls into the tank. When I've seen these at a fee LFS they never have the foam guards on them. I'm curious what others think when it comes to using foam covers.

I don't use them any more. It looks cleaner without the foam plus Id rather it push the stuff towards the overflows.

When I first used them I noticed they get pretty dirty quick when left on during feeding. So I set up my apex to have my pumps shut off when feeding. Found out that it take a bit longer till they get dirty again due to fish poop ect. I ended up removing them all together. The only time ill put them on is when I introduce a new anemone into the tank until they get settled in. Then ill remove it.
