Vortech MP40w, who has one?

Does anyone in the middle TN area have one in their tank? If so, I might like to stop by to see a demo sometime.

If ya got one, what's your review?

I assume one would be more than enough for a 90g 36"x24" tank right? (LOL) I saw were someone suggested to a guy to get 2 of them for a 90g (assume a 48" tank)...I'd say two would be overkill, heck one might be on a 90g, but I don't know...

John,

I just got mine in today. You are more than welcome to come by and see it. Let me know when you want to swing by. I have seen a few in the sale forums for a decent price. I got mine with the battery backup for $425.

I have had mine about a month, running one single on a 90G currently, 48"x18". It's enough, for sure, but I could see going to two, just to to get some crossflow, etc. Seems overkill, but I'd run them at 50% or less. I am not running the one I have even close to full tilt.

Same here I got mp20, 3 mp40w and mp10. With 2 back up. And they do the job when Power is lost.
You can come By anytime after 9pm to check out my 3in wave.In my 6' long sps tank. Im right by opryland hotel.
One of or the best pump out there. I've had vortech pump for 2yrs.
When buying a used one be careful on what you get. Ecotech had a bad batch of mp40w that come out last winter.

This thing puts out a ton of flow. I had 3 koralia's and a Seio 1500 and it decimated them. I blew off half of my SPS that were not glued down when I boosted it up. Zef, you should put a video up of that wave. I got mine dialed in, but it is just a baby wave at the moment.

John- Are you regretting the Sicce decision?

No, not yet. I haven't messed with them enough, the "dial-a-flow" is hard to get used too...it does odd patterns that can be tricky to adjust with the rigid tilt adjustment (it only does like 15 or 20 degree increments), the rotation is fine. I think once I get them programmed with the RKL, it might be better.

Both just blast everything, I even have the #2 dialed to the smallest opening...it's a challenge in a 36" tank. No matter where I place them they are too close to something, or send flow where I don't want it... trial and error I guess...

I just sold my K3s with the wavemaker, it was sweet because it would change the pump flows from like 270-850 and all through out alternating and such...it really did well... I have limited space, and the box was hoggin too much...I didn't like flow focusing grids, so I left them off, of course snails getting in were a pain...anyway, it's on a truck to FL right now.

Guys, thanks for all the offers, I'll be in touch to chat more and pay a visit or two...

Congrats on the K3 sale. I thought about getting them from you, but decided the Vortech would be much easier to conceal and I like the programability better. I like that the driver is no bigger than my Aqua Controller. The Sicce's sound like a PITA, but like you said trial and error.

From what I have seen the MP10's pack a punch for their size. I know two would do you for sure, but someone that has actually run an MP10 could chime in on whether one will do you or not.

2 mp10's will work for want you have. But what's the good about these vortech pumps is they wil grow with you. What do I mean about this. Let's say you get a mp40w for your 37gal tank and it works great at 50% or lower of power. And a year later you start to think (I want a bigger tank) well a powerhead you won't need to upgrade. You have the mp40w or if you get the mp20 it's just a $100 more to up grade it to mp40w. I'm not trying to talk you out of a mp10 it's a good lil powerhead. Just give you food for thought. So hope I helped a lil.

I appreciate the feedback, and thanks for letting me hijack the thread!

I've ran a few tanks, and am not considering future systems. As much as I'd love to have a 120 apartment living just isn't having it. Plus, I'll have a larger reef when I buy a house, not sure if Nashville is the place... yet. By that time, these things will be replaced by next gen.

What I am wondering about is flow, noise & footprint. I plan to run a sandbed, a decent amount of rock, and mostly sps. I would like a ton of turnover without creating divots! Do you run two opposite each other / does it matter? Running two sounds like it would require the wireless unit as well, right? Thoughts?

Flow - 2 MP10's or 1 MP20.

Noise - Not an issue at all. You hear a very low hum when there is no other noise in the room.

Footprint - Smallest of any other powerhead you could possibly use, even if you went with the MP20/40.

I use a fine sandbed and do not have any issues. You just have to place it high enough and fine tune it to your tank to get the right amount of undertow. If you do run two, you would want to run them apart from each other according to ecotech. I have seen it done both ways, but logic says to put them across form each other. As far as I know, all of the new units are wireless, but I may be speaking out of turn there.

Hope that helps.

If you run two of them, make sure to get the new MP10 wireless units so they can talk. :)

I'm planning on getting an MP10 for my 30g cube soon, just not sure when. :)

There was no way one mp40 could do my 75 properly. I had to use 2 and dial them down to get even flow through the tank.

I agree Zach, thus the reason I am ordering the second one on Monday. I can survive on one, but it is not nearly enough to do what I want to do on the 140.

Much more flexibility. 2 are about right for the 110, but I will be ordering a 3rd I think. 100% control now that I can use the Apex to dial them in where I want them. Just because they are big and bad *** doesn't mean you have to crank them. You can dial them down and adjust as needed. Also nice to have the ability to blast the living @#@!#$% out of your tank to stir up detritus, too

Make sure th Apex Vortech controller can use the new ES drivers *if* the Apex module is just a wireless master. the program codes are different from what I have been told. Just food for thought before buying it as the ES came out long after the SDK from Ecotech.
