vortech or tunze?

Witch power head should I get for a 120 mixed reef? I dont really care about the price im looking for performance and a good quality product that will last for awhile.

i have tried both and both are good products...slightly different.....

tunze will give more focused stream...vortech will spread more and can be softer to the tank/corals...

tunze will be bigger in the tank..but smaller outside the tank....

vortech will be smaller in the tank but bigger on the outside...

vortech comes with controller...tunze you need the controller...

vortech does give some sound outside the tank so depending on how quiet you may hear something...the tunze are silent to the outside.....

tunze can be angled /pointed... the vortechs are straigh shooting and spread....
but again both are great pumps and work well and perform..... just different...

I own a Vortech and love it. You having such a large tank though would most likely need multiple vortech MP40's.

You can always do an MP40 plus a few regular powerheads.

I don't know enough about the Tunze to know if it alone will provide you with enough flow

I have 2 MP40Ws on my 125. They are small and provide a lot of flow, but at the same time, don't blast the tissue off of corals. I would recommend the MP40W. I've had mine for years and they work great.

I have 4 koralias in there already but I feel that I need a little more. If I do get a vortech which setting do I need to put it at?

put it on reefcrest.. it gives a nice sway to the tank

i loved the wave mode you can pretty much make a wavebox on that setting...
that allows a different movement than the koralias ...you could have the best of both worlds..

I vote Vortechs. It's always best to keep electricity out of the tank when possible. Both great pumps. Plus I like to buy American when I can. We do good work and need the commerce.
IMHO

If the vortechs weren't annoyingly loud I would say get them. Since I don't want to hear the motors rev up every second or minute I have to vote for tunze. I have both in my tank right now. I only have an mp20 and I can hear it . The 40 is so much louder. Yes mine is aligned properly. The tunze I can't hear at all.
Not sure what you are in to but if you have an interest in a neptune systems apex controller you can make a tunze act somewhat like the reefcrest mode that I also think is great. Only difference is it won't be a random ramp up and down. You will program how high and low the ramp will be by percentages and then the ramp up and down times which the up and down times can be different. Only thing is if you say 15 seconds up and 25 seconds down it is set that way until you reprogram it. Still a great feature that levels the field a bit more.
After that the vortech is a sweet idea and works well. I don't like noise.
Of course for $800 you get 2 vortechs. For $950 you get 2 tunzes and a sweet full tank controller / monitor. Controls lights and reactors, all pumps, alarms. It doesn't wipe your butt so don;t try it.
:)

The noise is highly overrated. Mine was noticeable at first but not any more and its in the living room in a quiet tank. I vote mp40w.

btw, i do have to agree..i changed my larger tunzes to the vortex due to it being gentler....

some people are changing cases on the larger tunzes to make the stream broader...

i am using 2 vortex as my main units then a few smaller tunzes for secondary in non flow areas.... as they are directional...

Absolutely, also you have to keep in mind at what setting do you have them on - full blast or dialed back a bit. Every application will be different and if you don't run them full blast that means less noise than the not so loud noise folks harp about.

3 different Vortechs, 2 Gen1 + a Gen2, all made noise I could hear easily 15 feet away. Mine never subsided, or even really reduced. Maybe it is consistency of the motors, or luck- but I wouldn't call it exaggerated.

I've used both, different models and generations. I would take Tunze hands down.

For me:
Tunze 6105s- Dead silent, I cannot hear them with my ear an inch from the tank. They are adjustable and easily hidden in the corners of my tank, with a max of 3" of cord in the tank. They are a highly reliable pump, with a long proven track record. I added the 6205 impeller housings, and the flow very similar to the Vortech.

Vortechs- I found them noisy, all 3 I tried. With them on 100% or pulse, the noise could be heard 2 rooms away without trying. To use them optimally, you are pretty much stuck with them being mounted to the sides of the tank, which was an eyesore on my 3 viewing panes. The cord, although not in the water, still is very visible on the outside. They are more prone to problems simply beacause of the technology, althought the support is great.

I have 2 mp40 vortechs and they do make some noise . The good thing is you know they are working. Tunze makes a great product and i have have a few but they cant move water like a vortech.
