Vortech Pump on Plywood Tank

Grizzled & Cynical
I am curious if anyone has successfully used a vortech pump with plywood? Does it affect the pump like glass? So, if the 60 works with 3/4" glass will it also work through 3/4" plywood.

It seems like it should. 3/4" space is 3/4" space.

Different materials will mess with the magnetic field differently. There is also the issue of the two faces being parallel. What is the plywood coated with and how smooth is both sides?

since it's not metal, I seriously doubt that wood is any different than glass, when it comes to holding up a Vortech pump.

I really do not know. But I do know different materials will impact magnets differently. It is something that would need to be researched. Also whatever coating is used might matter. Not being a magnet expert those are things I would look into if it were me.

Edit: Looks like wood has almost the same magnetic permeability as air so that should not be a big issue.

I'm hoping Ecotech will step in and clear this one up.

Is a hypothetical question as I pondered my next (and larger) tank. I built a plywood tank many years ago and find the prospect of doing so again appealing. But, I have a sizable 'investment' in vortech pumps and would like to continue to use them for a good long while. Absent some input from Ecotech, I may just experiment on the plywood box I use as my topoff reservoir.

Simon,

I am unaware of any VorTechs currently in use on plywood aquariums. That said, with a thickness of 3/4 of an inch you shouldn't have any issues with getting the pump to couple.
