Want to Build a Pond...Maybe

I was thinking about building a small pond right outside of my house, actually it will part out from the house, maybe about 5 feet. nothing too fancy, also it wont be an undergeround one. It will be about 3 cinder blocks high, with the rubber pond liner and a nice ledge. Now, can this be done as saltwater or will it have to be freshwater. Thanks, any help will be extremely appreciated. ;)
I was also thinking about just keepinbg fish, no corals...well maybe some zoanthids of course.

i know a guy over in orlando that did an outdoor saltwater pond.he made a shade cloth roof that extended out a few feet in every direction over the pond.he had a 30gallon drum setup like a wavebox.and a chiller than he only ran when the pond was over 90something.he had all kinds of softies, rics, zoas, shrooms, gsp, blastos, fungia.i got some of my best rics from his pond, they split like crazy in my tank.he did have it above ground but used a rigid pond liner and said he wished he insulated around it.

checkinhawk, what would be a sufficient insulator...? and How?? U have any pictures of it?? Thanks...

i dont know his name on rc(he is a member of the orlando group)i will pm him on another forum he goes to and see if he has any pics of the setup.he told me it was really just a test to see if it was possible and from what i saw it was.last time i talked to him he was going to tear it down but it was running for well over a year.

If you live in Lakeland, go check out the one they have at Nolans. I am sure someone there can tell you about it.
Just letting you know there may be one closer than you think.:eek1:

In the parking lot, behind the fenced in area, it sits in there.
Ask them about it, someone will take you out there and show it to you.

ok i heard fom the guy,he doesnt have pics.he told me he used a 300 gallon agriculture rubbermaid container(tractor supply comp).he built a box around his but didnt insulate it.he suggests digging the pond down into the ground a little to help with temp and building an insulated box around the above ground portion..he said his biggest problem was leaves getting into the pond.and a shade cloth roof was a must.

If you build this Don I'd buy tickets to see it!

If you put screen around it that would block leaves. And if you put glass over the top that would stop rain right?

checkinhawk - Did you ask the guy who has one how he dealt with the heat in the summer? I would've thought it would require allot of water underground to cool that much heat.

Checkinhawk, that sound like a monster. I kind of want to make the pond not really buy a plastic one. Where did he keep all the equipmnet, skimmer, powerheads, etc?? Sump or Fuge?? Thanks again.

Alizarin, the first week will be free...after that 12.95 adults and 8.95 for childrens. Only 1 rule, No throwing money in the pond. :D

he had all the pumps outside,he had them raised off the ground on his deck and covered with a box.the heat issue was handled with a chiller.he let this pond get real hot before the chiller would turn on.i want to say he let it hit the low 90's before the chiller would kick on.i dont think he ran a skimmer,he had no sump or fuge.just powerheads and a big surge device.

Sounds real simple....wish he could take some pix. Im thinking of throwing a skimmer under a waterfall made by some slate rock or something.
