Wanted: Fish

Looking for Free or nearly free fish for the freshly cycled 58 Gallon. Nothing expensive just something to put in the tank for a month of so to make sure everything is going fine. The cleanup crew seems to be doing ok but I think I need a little work on the flow of the tank. Anyone have unwanted fish swimming around?

do you have a sump?....if so...get a damsel from the critter and keep him in there so he'll be easy to catch in the sump......or if its something that you'll want to keep later and in the display, get a chromis

or put the damsel in the display tank if you are wanting a reason to take your entire aquascaping apart & redo it when you are ready to get rid of the damsel LOL

yes....i speak from experience :mad2:

12gal nano that i had to EMPTY of all rock & drain 2/3rds the water before i could catch the lil sob fuji damsel to move to a different tank

you're luck you had only a 12 gal james.....i had mine in a 20 ...but ive heard horror stories with those who had them in much larger tanks....eeek!

the people at the pet stores like the critter make it look sooooo freakin easy....they stick a net in the tank & BOOM they got the fish

Not only do they have them in larger tanks, sometimes they "think" they've finished their aquascaping after hours of work, too. Only to find out they have to bring it down for a tiny terror of a little fish!

Oh, btw, I used to work at an LFS in Pittsburgh. The big secret is that we have a little talk with all the fish when they first come in off the truck. We make a deal with them that if they will make it look easy for us to catch them when customers are around, we'll not only let them out of their suffocating little bags, but even feed them occasionally. Most of them are smart enough to agree to the terms.

if you want to keep them I would buy a few black fresh water mollies and turn them to salt or if you want I have a couple of fish you can have real cheap

Thanks Rhett. It is all about manipulating them before letting them out of the bag

BTW, totally off topic...but the corals I got from you in late August/early September are doing amazing. I have 27w of light over the 3 gallon tank and everything is flourishing, even the monti cap! I've got mushrooms galore now too. One of the blue mushies got so big (about 3 or so inches across) that I had to cut him off and move him. All the zoas and gsp have taken off. I see new growth on the gsp almost daily. And the monti cap, boy do i love monti caps. I'm working on the wife to get me a small chunk of Idaho grape for Christmas. I've blown my reef budget for the year and I don't know if I can make it all the way to Jan 1st! Thanks again for everything.

Don't cycle with fish. Cycle with dead shrimp. Grab a couple out of the freezer or from the seafood counter. Thaw it out, rip it up, and then let it rot in the tank. Cycling is all about good bacteria. The bacteria will grow from about anything over a few weeks. Get something encrusted with coralline algae and scrap it into the tank, or some live rock, or live sand, or a few snails with stuff encrusted over their shells and you'll be in business. With live rock or sand even in a few days. Don't waste your time. Save the fishes. (of course, this is my opinion, but it does work)

She's already cycled the tank, it's been setup for a while. She's just looking for something to ensure that more expensive stuff don't keel over as soon as they go into the water.
