wood shaver...there we go.

should look like this...

seems to me to be too much work and you have to let it sit in water along time before you can add it to a tank,i'd save up and get base rock

i don't mind waiting months for the rock to cure. i have no tank set up to put it in yet anyway...it will be at least that long before the tank is ready to run. i plan to cure the rock in rubbermaid tubs and/or the tanks on our toilets, then put it all in a 100g stock tank along with the rest of my current live rock to seed it.

i don't want to pay for base rock when i can make it.

update - i found an inudstrial source in the usa for dark granulated pvc particles.

they are going to ship me 35 lbs. cost = $13 + actual shipping

will update when it arrives...i have to send them a money order, so it may take a bit.

a 35 pound package of black granulated pvc particles showed up at my doorstep on friday. it's exactly what i was hoping it would be. the particles are mostly triangular shaped, sized from no more than an 1/8" long all the way down to dust-sized particles.

tonight my wife helped make up some muck made out of the following ingredients:

2 parts granulated pvc
1 part ground oyster shell (rinsed)
1 part black landscaping colorado lace rock
1 part play sand
1 part quickcrete type 1 portland cement
~1 part water

we also mixed in a handfull of pasta shells after everything was mixed.

after seeing everything mixed together, i think i'm going to skip the oyster shell and increase the amout of pvc. the pvc particles look identical to the crushed oyster shells once they are grey and there is no chance of the pvc leaching organics that the oyster shells might leach over time.

the mixture is sitting in moist sand molds. i'll take pics once they've cured...hopefully in about a week.

tonight we made another round of rocks. this time we skipped the oyster shells and pasta.

3 parts pvc particles
1 part sand
1 part black lace rock
~1.5 part cement
enough water to mix everything into a sludge

i have a better feeling about this batch.
