Watanabei angel

I recently picked up a female and have her in QT now. A little shy but eating great and becoming more outgoing by the day. I really like this fish and if she does well plan to plop down the bucks for the more expensive male.

My question, I've read that this species sometimes transitions from female to male much like wrasse do. I would hate to introduce her to the DT, buy a male and have her transition before I can introduce the male. How likely is the female to transition when by her self?

I've heard of people adding two females with their one current female, and allowing a male to become out of the three. Good luck either way! Awesome fish you have.

When working with hermaphroditic fish it is best to add the subordinate sex, IMO and IME. You will likely see the colors changing, but she could start the transition before the colors begin to change (internal changes before external changes are noticed). I would play it safe and get a smaller female. It's not unlike getting a small clown to add to an existing one (well they progress different in sexes, but you get the point?).

I have kept the Spot breast angel beofore...If I had to do it it over again I would buy one and let it change. These fish are deeper water angels..I lost my female to swim bladder disease( the bends) and the male just got old.
