water change (how to do it) why?

All you do is take 15 to 20% of the watr in the tank out, and replace it with new saltwater. The reason for water changes is the salt you use contains essential elements that the tank and the fish/corals need to stay healthy. You will be replacing the old trace elements with new ones.
You not only replave the trace elements but you lower the organic levels, and nutrient leves which will help with algae control and water clarity.

i have a 70 gallon with a 15 gallon sump and a small refugium.

i replace 15 gallons every other week, sometimes i go three weeks. i mix up the new water in a rubbermaid tub with a heater and a pump for circulation and let that go overnight or 24 hours.

then i use the pump with a hose and remove 15 gallons out of the sump (i turn the return pump and skimmer off) then i put the pump with the hose into the rubbermaid tub and put the new water in the sump, turn everything back on and i'm good to go for another 2 weeks.

the reason for the water change is to add fresh water and remove some of the old water which is building up with maybe nitrates, phosphates, detrius, just bad stuff.

good luck! this hobby is very addicting.
