water change question

my friend and i are having a discussion...

i have a 90 gal tank and i change about 10 gal every 12 days.
what is the best way to do it.

he says take one gal out at a time and pour a new gal in to the sump.

i say take all out 10 gals at one time and pour new water into the sump.
i test all the water before i start to check the salt and temp are the same...

any ideas?

Take the old out, and put in the new :) I do mine all at once, although I do it all in the sump and then turn my return pump back on. The key is having the new water close to where the old was in terms of pH, salinity and temp...

yes do it all at once.. otherwise your just mixing one new gal with the main tank. then taking out another gal that you just mixed.. not a good effective way, your not taking most of the old water, your taking out the newly mixed water too.
so if you dont understand that.. just take it all out.. then add the new :)

If your doing one gallon a day, that is fine. But if you take out a gallon, replace it and repeat 10 times you're actually taking out less bad water each time.

10 gal every 12 days all at once is fine too.

i think you should make sure your ph is the same to

The ph of freshly made salt water is not that important IMO in water changes of 20% or less.

Generally the salt you use will have buffers to adjust the pH to 8.0 or so. I use reef crystals and have tested my new salt water and the pH is 8.2.
