Water Changes - Fresh or Saltwater?

Hi All -

Newbie question. I am watching a youtube video by a tank manufacturer and it says when you do a water change you should use fresh water in a saltwater tank. Is this the case for all water changes?

It was in a video about Cycling, FYI.

No, you MUST use saltwater when you make water changes in a saltwater tank or your salinity will drop. You do want to use pure RO/DI water (purified fresh water) when you are topping off your tank to replace evaporated water.

Thanks! So RO/DI in the top off reservoir? I am glad that I ask this question or I would've had it wrong.

Don't confuse top off with water change. Two separate things. Both were properly explained by @JoshInSF. The water change is when you remove "X" gallons from your tank and replace with the same amount of new salt water.

When water evaporates from your tank it leave behind the salts, so for topoff all you need is pure water. With water changes you take saltwater out of the system so you need to put saltwater back in.

When they said freshwater, they probably meant freshly mixed saltwater.

Now I get it! Even ordered an RO/DI system with these good Labor Day deals so I've got both types on hand.
