% water changes

Sorry, the search feature is down, and I'm sure this has been discussed. I digress: What % water do you change in your nano and how often? I've read anywhere between 10% and 30% from weekly to bi-weekly.

Thx,

Aaron

I have found the best way to search is by going to GOOGLE then click on Advanced Search , enter your desired search terms then about 1/2 down your screen there is a box where you can enter Domain. If you enter www.reefcentral.com it will search reefcentral for the terms. Anyway thats a side note (a big side note).

I change my tanks(10, 20L, 29, 44, 90) weekly, anywhere from 10%-30% depends on the tank. They currently are all freshwater but I have a 10g nano reef I'm starting, I plan on weekly 10% changes there too.

Since selling my 50G system and downsizing to a smaller setup (10G) preparing for my imminent mil-related move, I've started aggressively pursuing a 50% water change every week. Everything's working well so far. Animals seem full of activity, I just mix the water a few days in advance and let it sit in my 5G bucket.

Here's something I came across the other day. Fairly interesting on water changes... a 100% water change. Done by none other than the famous Mr. Anthony Calfo. Here's the link:

Though large water changes are wonderful, a 100% water change would be very bad for a reef system. Some established water must remain in the tank to help balance the freshly introduced water with established bacteria. A 100% water change would also expose live rock, corals, inverts, etc to air which is damaging.

50% is a safe maximum.

I have a 24 gallon, I do 3 gallons twice a week. I figure with rocks and sand, I probably have 18 gallons of actual water. So my percentage is about 16 twice a week. IMO my tank is overstocked, I'm getting rid of some stuff.
