Water damage HELP ASAP

Well just when I thought my tank was doing good today my return tube decided to come off and spray my apex and all outlets and modules. I've let it all dry for two hours now but I plugged it in and nothing seems to work right. Question is has this ever happened to anyone and what should I do? One thing I do know my internet to the Neptune is down until tomorrow as that part has fried.

Id put everything in a bag of rice like a cell phone. Unfortunately 2 hours I doubt was long enough if they were really soaked.

But the rice will help extract the moisture.

2 hours isnt long enough at all, you should have let it dry for a few days to a week before turning it on. Some people also say to rinse it in rodi water to remove the salt, ive never done this so cant say if it works better or not. But have had a phone drop into a puddle of water, put it in a bag of rice for 5 days before even trying to turn it on and after 5 days everything worked just fine.

Hate to say but you may have fried it by turning it on so soon, but dont give up hope.

Good luck

When I turned it on the status light would blink for a bit and most things would run. Then about two minutes in the return pump would start turning on and off. And the one bar would just make a loud sound so I unplugged it.

Most likely it is shorting out from the salt and not dried enough. Imo i would buy a new controller, i deff wouldnt risk my tank on a peice of equipment that mainly runs your tank to shorting out again after a while even if it seems to be running good for a while.

Crap now I have to be apart of the apex/vertex debate. Too bad I don't think I can wait for either of them to ship to me. Do you think I can get away with just new power bars?

I dont know, never had a cotroller. It is possiable but again it could be the main unit. If you know someone with powerbars you could ask to try theirs rather than buying new only to find out you need everything.

Well some good news. I unplugged everything expect the return and put it on the outlet that had my web hook up so it was always set to on. Return is working and all modules light up green for status except my 1 link with just flashes but I suspect that's cause it's not plugged into an outlet and is getting no power. Seems like it just might be the power bar although the head unit is just a blue screen but I don't really need that. Hopefully I have some better news to report tomorrow if my house doesn't burn down first.

Saltwater pretty much will destroy any electronics it gets into. I have seen the inside of camcorders after being splashed by shamu. They are a total loss. Corrosion is everywhere on the circuit boards. It will gradually eat up the metals until more things will quit working. Make sure your electronics is where it cannot get wet when this happens.

There is no where else that is safer to put them? If not hopefully you can figure out a way to prevent the water from getting to them where they are. Try and figure out how to place a splash guard between your electronics and the most probable sources of water splashing or spraying onto the electronics. You already know one source now. I was in this hobby in the 90's and had this very thing happen to me. Luckily back then there was no controller for it to get into. So this time around I built my own stand with separate compartments for the electronics. I have already had a water return come loose but this time the leak detection stopped the pumps before any damage was caused. If you have a prebuilt stand then your only options are to put the electronics in a separate cabinet or try and put something between the electronics and any probable source of it getting wet. It would be near impossible to prevent every possible scenario of water damage. Just try and come up with ways to reduce the more common issues. Hope this helps.

That is the big advantage of having the sump and controllers either behind a wall or in another room. It doesn't have to be real pretty.

The rice worked for my cell phone that decided to take a swim at the beach. My Jawbone ended up going thru the laundry and it worked also, but you should leave it in the rice for at least a week. Never turn things on until you put it in the rice. Also, blow dryers create to much heat and can ruin the electronics.

Well 2 new e8's and we're back up and running. I'll put the old ones in a bag of rice and see if that works as well.

That might temporarily help but salt deposits attract moisture from the air. So in time your back where you are now. Good luck on resurrecting them. Hopefully not much got into them after all. Anything is wort a try I guess.

Get some of those plastic plugs for kid proofing outlets and plug them into any unused outlets on your power bars.
