I have a redsea max 170 and planning to use standard pump that came with it for my return. Now for water current either Jebao wp-10 or 25 or any other suggestions. Do I just need 1?
Depends on placement. You generally want a pump or powerhead to break the surface of the water, then one to create some flow midway-lower down in your tank. You may also find a third placed near the bottom to keep the sand bed free of algae and the like helps. The bigger the tank, more flow you need.
One MP10 or Chinese equivalent would probably be fine, but I always advocate 2 pumps to give you some options for controlling water flow. The goal should be gentle to moderate, indirect flow over the entire tank.
Multiples are almost always better and in general you want powerheads rated to about 30x display tank size in gallons per hour as a good start/general recommendation..
And do NOT get an old model Jebao like the WP.. They were horrible as far as reliability goes..
The PP, SW, or OW series are far superior to their first generation stuff.. Avoid the WP and RW series.
I currently run 3 different powerheads in my display (40G). on jeabo for wave making/ pulsing flow, one korallia for complimentary flow blowing across the flow from the jeabo on the far end of the tank, and one tucked down in behind my rock work to keep flow in the back area where the rock deadens the flow from the other two powerheads. (not to mention the double outlet return pump which blows across and down the front of the tank from the opposite end as the jeabo)
