Water quality tests

I already have the standard water parameters test for pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate...I've succesfully completed the nitrogen cycle and now wish to add some corals and fish...what are the additional tests that I will need? Thanks for the input!!!

Oh, and they are just softies that I wish to add...like Zoos, Xenia, mushrooms, etc...and beginner fish like rabbitfish, clownfish
Thanks again!!!

After a while (assuming that you keep to your husbandry skills) i'd stop testing for Ammonia and Nitrite.

You should be testing regulary to check your PH, Alk and Calcium.

Calcium is more important for Clams and hard corals and other animals with a calcium carbonate skeleton, but maintaing high calcium 380-450 will help coraline algea grow and disuade micro algea from taking a foothold.

A high Alk 7-10dkh will help buffer PH and stop PH swings - which is not good for your livestock.

Your PH should not swing more than 8.00 - 8.40 in a 24 hr period.

thanks Kamil-- you're right about the Ammonia & Nitrate-- they've been non-existent since the cycle ended-- thanks for the info- I'm printing it out right now...

Its Amomonia and Nitrite (No2) not Nitrate (No3). You will need to keep testing for that.

Anytime Nitrate (No3) is over 10ppm, a water change will bring it back down again.

Good luck.

Oh, I meant nitrite-- believe me, my nitrates have risen since the cycle...and the classic water change has helped to keep them under 10ppm...thanks again!

and are you familiar w/ the product that claims to lower Nitrates naturally??? saw it in the LFS and was wondering if the shortcut worked in between water changes

Just to let you know, depending of what type of rabbitfish you want, it my decide to eat your soft corals. If you keep it well fed if might stay away from them.

I've heard of them (nitrate sponges?), but have never used them. If you are not overfeeding and doing weekly water changes - then forget about using such things.

Having said that, I would also be interested to see if anyone has had any success with them.

The nitrate sponges work, but require a lot of media, according to what I've read. The breeders forum has some reviews, IIRC, and the chemistry forum has more, too.
