I'm using a Brute 33 gal container for my mixed saltwater.....I'm starting to smell a odder like cat **** when I open the lid. I make up about 25 gallons at a time last about 3 weeks of water changes. I've changed all my RO filter about 2 months ago so that leave that out......I'm using reef crystals salt....also I'm getting a brown slim at the bottom of the container.......I'm keeping the container at room temp........I've also cleaned out the container several times......I'm running a small powerhead 24/7.........I also have a 18 gal Rubbermaid container for my top off water - salt and it has no smell at all.....I'm getting rid of the brute can....but just wondering if there is something in the plastic that is seeping out....any clue:

I've experience the same from a brute can, dunno what it is, but I think it is just the rubber, I really haven't pay much attention
Rogger you think its causing any harm.?

ive seen that happened to some people before. alot of containers are known to leach out phosphates after a while too. not positive on the brute cans though.

how olds the can before that began to happen anyhow?

My can is about 6 to 8 months old.....you have to put your head in the can to get the smell....I juts noticed the brown film on the inside today I was making a new batch of water.....update just checked the phosphates....and not to bad .05

i have the exact same problem with the same can i believe. does yours have the wheels that attach to the base too? i find that really convenient to roll it in and out of the house to collect freebie rainwater.

Yes I have the wheels..I just have to roll it up to the tank and refill.........But now Im wondering about the smell....I hate to buy another can think I paid around 40 bucks......I wouldnt mind if the can was bad.....but Im hearing other members having the same problem...??? or is it a problem....scary....I been dealing with problems with my main tank....and it maybe coming from a 40 dollar trash can....lol

I store my RO water in a brute can. If it starts to smell I run ozone thru it for just a few minutes. That eliminates the smell completely.

the smell is not what Im worried about..,,,,is it causing any harm to my tanks......now the can I have my topoff water I could leave for weeks and never a smell......its only the mixed saltwater

I have never heard this, but will look into.

Personally I don't think the smell is anything that would affect the tank, if that was the case I would have seen issues when I do water changes in the filterless tank, to the contrary, the small tank shows positive reaction when I do a water changes all the time.
