This is a dumb question but I'm not sure. Is a KH test the same as alkalinity test?

For the most part, yes. There are two common values we use in the reef hobby for alkalinity. meq/l and dKH. I personally use dKH because it's easy for me to remember. There should be a conversion chart on your testkit to convert to either of these values. I prefer Salifert test kits because they use this system.
