I want to increase the water volume of my tank so the water quality can be more stable
I already have a sump and don’t want to get a bigger one. Can I connect a big barrel full of salt water to the tank kind of like another sump?

Sure, just need a way to pump water into it and drain it back out. You may want to consider any additional heaters you may require with the added water volume.

Rubbermaid tubs are very popular for sumps, thats what I use. They can hold a ton of water

I've done that using a Rubbermaid tub. T'd off the drain line into the tub and had it gravity feed into the sump. Didn't even have to add anymore pumps/powerheads. Did put in a valve to control flow into the tub though.

The plus of the tub is that it has flat surfaces that are easy to attach bulkheads to.

Of course then I got carried away and added a bunch of rock to the tub and turned it into a refugium of sorts .
