It is time for me to replace my old school dive camera. It is one of the point and shoot (film) cameras in a waterproof case for diving. Does anyone know where a good place to find the camera dive cases for new digital cameras?? TIA!

It depends on the camera that you are using. www.ikelite.com probably some of the best housings you can buy. But they are expensive, i.e. more than you paid for the camera. If you are using a Canon digital, Canon makes their own housings for some of their models. If you haven't bought a camera yet, I would highly suggest that you look into a Canon G9. incredible camera for underwater shooting. A little pricey at $450-$500, but the Canon housing can be bought from amazon for $180.

Funny - I always thought of Ikelite as the low end of housing. :P Don't get me wrong - they make nice housing, but they are definitely not the "best" housing you can buy. However, they have good price/feature ratings.

Then maybe i am misinformed. I don't remeber the forums that I was browsing but everyone there swore by ikelite housings. (no, it wasn't the ikelite website :-) Maybe it's a difference between high end consumer and pro style housings. What housing are considered top quality?

Sea and sea, Aquatica, Light and Motion, Seatool, Gates. There are a bunch of VERY expensive brands of underwater cases for DSLR cameras.

Strobe lights are usually available from the same companies. Lots to choose form, but I would start by researching Sea and Sea, Ikelite or Inon

Ikelite is a great company, and they make very useful cases, but they are not anywhere near the most expensive models out there.

I would agree that a G9 is a great camera to for recreational, underwater photography. For less than a grand, you will have a decent camera with the canon housing that you can take to 130ft. Good picture quality and video capabilities. Upgrade the case to the Ikelite and/or get the wide angle and macro wet lens kits for the G9 and you should be able to get some decent shots.

I love mine. My photography skills are still being worked on, but the camera is great.

You can check out my videos and pictures here. www.AirInHeresReef.com

If you are a serious photographer, expect to drop at least several grand on your new kit.

Pictures aint cheap.

I have within in the last 12 months purchased a new Rebel Xti and Seatool housing for it. I got what I believe was a good deal from www.backscatter.com. If anything they won me over with service, they always were prepared to answer my questions and concerns. I usually try to by local, but the local camera house would never persue anything even though he was a Nikon and Ikelite dealer. Score 1 for internet service.

I love this camera and housing, still in the feeling my way through stages, but I am getting there. My previous camera was a Sea and Sea, upgraded for the megapixels. I would by from backscatter again.

Happy photo snapping!
