Is the tank running? Is there a sump in the stand. If there is I would be a bit reluctant to apply a finish. If the stand is not yet under the tank then things are a bit easier. I would use a any varnish (like polyurethane) applied as two or three thin coats. Some may recommend a "spar" varnish or urethane. This has more oil and uv stabilizers than regular varnish. This is used on boats for its resistence to the uv light and expansion and contraction (the finish does not cure as hard and you won't gain any additional protection from moisture (at least when we are talking about a tank stand).
