Watts per gallon??

watts per gallon is not a good way to measure. it depends on the depth of the tank, and the sq feet per bulb

Its a 30g Oceanic Cube L20.5 x W18.5 x H21.
Sand bed will be about 3" thick.

I was considering the Current or Coralife 150HQI w 2x65 pendants.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated!!

I was considering a (250 w 2x65) but i was worried that heat would be an issue.

Thanks again;)

I run 250w MH lights on a 30 gal Oceanic cube and heat will definitely be a problem during the summer. I had to get a chiller to keep the temps in check. Youââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll also have to consider finding a good spot for your LPS (if you have any) if you donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t want them ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œdeep friedââ"šÂ¬Ã‚.

Are you runing anu PC's with that?

That's why I am considering the 150HQI with 2 65w pc's. It will help keep the heat down and give me enough light for clams.

No, no PC, just MH. I had 150W MH before but I felt that it wasnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t enough for SPS and the clam I was always planning to get.

I have a small, may be 2.5-3ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚, Maxima. I got it just few weeks ago. As far as chiller is concerned I have the Pacific Coast CL-280 which is rated at 1/10HP. I am really happy with the chiller which allows me keeping my tank at a very constant temperature even with the 250W MH.

By the way, how are you going to fit MH and PCââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s over the cube? Do you have a canopy over the tank? I looked at dozens of different MH/PC pendants and all of them are about 24ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ long and will stick outââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦

idua,

I am looking at the Coralife or the Current 24" I had seen a Coralife 24" Aqualite Pro on a 30 cube and it looked good w/o any spill over of light. My cube is going in my kitchen and I want the look to be as clean as possible w/o having to build a canopy.

I will be pushing 280 total with one of those combos. I hope to be able to keep some of the heat down using that combination rather than one 250.

What set up are you using for filtration/sump/refuge?

i also have a 30gal. cube, i am getting a 175w MH SE, what would be the best kind of clam to put on the bottom, also i have a 2in. sandbed.

Fredy,

Sounds good. Post some pics when you get this set up, Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m wondering how this is going to look. One of the concerns I had with 24ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ fixtures was that they are wider than the tank itself so I went with a PFO 250w pendant.

I ordered my tank custom with a built in overflow which feeds my sump made from two 5.5 gal all-glass tanks glued together. The sump houses my skimmer, macro algae compartment, return pump and pump feeding my chiller. All of this is controlled by Digital Aquatics controller. The built in overflow takes descent amount of room but I heard that the cubes are made form tapered glass and drilling them may be impossible. Whether this is true or not I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t know but this is the information I received from my LFS and others here on RC. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll post some pics tonight, may be theyââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll give you some ideas for your setup if you donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t have it finalized yet.

danferd2002,

To be honest with you I am no clam expert. I just got my first clam few weeks ago. I know that some have higher light requirement than others but I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t want to give you any advice which may be incorrect due to my ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œnoobnessââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ with the subject. Hopefully one of the more seasoned clam experts can provide some information.

iuda,

I just got an email back from Oceanic. The tank bottom is tempered! I was going to order it custom originally but since I was able to get the whole set up (tank, base, glass cover) for $250 I figured I would bag the custom idea. Besides I am having a Perfecto 70g Corner custom done for me right now.

Looking forward to you pics! sounds like a nother option to consider. I figured if I go with the CPR PS (HOT fuge w/ built in Skimmer) leaving room in the bottom if the base for a chiller Just in case.

danferd,
You should be able to keep most clams (according to what I have been told;) ) I am going with the Complete light unit so I can provide 24 hr lighting in the tank w/o doing a retro kit and custum canopy. Its 150 HQI and two 65 actinics w/ lunar lights. I am hoping it will help keep the heat down with this set up than running a 250 QUI.

I have a 40 Breeder with an aqualight Pro 150W 14K Phoenix and 2 x 65W actinics. I have a crocea about half way up and a squamosa on the sand and both are doing fine and growing.

OK. To illustrate my crazy methodology here is a pic of on of the two 5.5 gal tanks with a hole in its back. The second tank had this hole mirrored so that the two tanks could be siliconed together to make them little stronger and then connected with a 2.5ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ bulkhead.

Here is the sump under the cabinet with the drain pipe from the tank, baffles and return pump in the back, although you canââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t see it.

And finally here it is in operation. I installed a shelf in the middle of the cabinet for miscellaneous reef junk (doser/top off) and to mount the retro (2x32w PC) light for the fuge. You can barely see the Remora skimmer on the right hand side in the back. There is a hole cut out in the shelf through which the skimmer is sticking out for easy removal of the collection cup.

Let me know if the pics are not showing up.
