I do not recommend power compact (PC) lighting because of their relatively low ~60 lumens per watt efficiency. T5 and T5HO lighting are more efficient at 90-100 lumens per watt (http://www.lrc.rpi.edu/programs/nlpip/lightingAnswers/lat5/pc1a.asp). The individual reflectors in many T5 fixtures direct even more light into your aquarium.

As you can tell, because of the wide disparity in lighting efficiencies, gallons-per-watt is no longer used as a guide.

Here is my humble suggestion:

• Consider the 48” Tek Light T5HO fixtures from www.reefgeek.com or www.diyreef.com . You can purchase ceiling or tank mounts with this fixture.

• Get two timers and run your actinic lamps for 10-12 hours daily and your white lamps for 4-6 hours at mid-day.

• If you think this is too much light, remove some of the lamps or choose bluer (dimmer) lamps.

The above lighting setup is relatively inexpensive, provides more light than PC lamps per watt, and is far more flexible than metal halide lighting.
