wavbox outside of tank

there was a post here a while ago where a fellow reefer took apart his wave box and made a box for it to be placed on the outside of his tank. Is this something that actually works, or just a novel idea? I like the wave box, but it is an eye sore in a tank that has no powerheads.

what size did he make the external box? and what diameter was the hole to fit the pump?
