Wavebox enough for 80g Tank?

What is the approximate turnover rate for a 48" x 20" x 20" 79g tank with a Tunze Wavebox?

Would the single tunze wavebox and a eheim 1260 return be enough for a bare bottom SPS tank?

I can't find any flow rates for the wavebox, I'm guessing because it moves water so differently than conventional powerheads.

I'd like to go with one wavebox and no other powerheads.

Thanks!

Kinetic,

You are right the Wavebox is not a circulation pump as it switches frequently I would consider it a surge which is not measurable against constant flow. The Wavebox creates the back and forth motion you see at the bottom of the ocean. The flow from the 1260 will give you a high amount of flow from a single return point. Someone else may have had experience for this configuration and size.
I would recommend the addition of other circulation from maybe a Nanostream as the Eheim 1260 will be a very narrow high flow force on this size aquarium.

Thanks for your response! I am wondering if the wavebox will provide enough flow for my tank regardless of the eheim return pump? I have no idea how to gauge it's ability, or is it only good for moving the water in a wave motion?

The wavebox is meant to supplement your existing flow, not replace it. On a tank your size, I would go with at least a pair of the 6045 Nano Streams and the wavebox if thats the way you want to go. If you can swing the price, a pair of the 6055's with the controller would be ideal.

Also, the wavebox has minimal effect in a 4 foot tank. The tank is not long enough and IMO your money would be better spent on the 6055's with the controller. Especially since you are setting up an SPS tank. You dont really see the benefits of the wavebox until you go with a 6 foot+ tank.

Personally, on a barebottom SPS tank I would shoot for 40-60x turnover.

The wavebox will create a decent surge in your tank but that along with the eheim return wont be sufficient. The wavebox surges so your not always going to get movement throughout the entire tank. The eheim, once its reached the tank it would have lost a little pressure and depending on how you have it set up, may not create appropriate water flow.

You would get better results if you added 2 or so of the nanostreams, 6055's on a controller possibly. This way you can create sufficient flow through the entire tank and the wavebox will suppliment the existing movement within the tank.

Cheers
Ryan
