Not sure about the free impeller..you'd have to ask Roger. Don't plan on a response as MACNA starts today. There's nothing wrong with the old impellers, they just improved the design a little (one piece unit), so I suspect it is not free.
Yes, it's comes out pretty easy. There's a rubber gasket around the nozzle that is used to keep it snug in the box, other than that, it just pulls right out.
I'd also recommend removing the sponge pad around the pump. It's just collects garbage and will eventually start to impede the flow. I find no need for it since I don't have those on my regular Stream pumps.
