How much clearance is needed behind the rocks for it to be effective?

This would only be important if it was going to be positioned along the back wall. If the wavebox is positioned along the front or in the middle it would not matter. The key is that no obsticles directly impede the output of the box, the clearer the shot across the tank, the better it will work.
