wavemaker

anyone have a used wavemaker such as this LINK
or an equivalent?

dont have any money to buy it but i do have a good bit of stuff laying around to trade

I'm sure the wavemaker itself is well made, however the feedback i've gotten to "wavemaking" is the wear and tear you put the powerheads through. Think about how many times someone has shut off a powerhead and had trouble getting it restarted. Then do that several times in a day..... Just a thought for you

you know for some unknown reason i never thought about that. i was hoping to get a little more random flow threw my tank and was thinking about using the wavemaker but i failed to realize that it would mess up my powerheads.

I wouldn't say mess up, more like use them up way ahead of their time. I'm in the same predicament trying to get better flow in the SPS tank 120 i'm setting up and am looking at Koralia's or Seio's with a Seio controller or comparable.

isnt there a certain type of Seio you have to have to use the controller? i have 3 620's and was thinking about that but wasnt sure

I hear that maxijets are pretty durable and do well on the timer. I thought H@rry had a number of maxijets on that type of timer.

Had not heard about specific units on the Seio controller. It pulls current down to 40% then back up to 100% on intervals. I wish they had a controller that alternated instead of both at same time. Maybe someone will chime in about one. As for Maxi-jets, I like them also but equate it to to driving 50 ft and restarting the car every time. I just can't see long term endurance in that kind of wavemaker. IMO

I've been told that the controllers with a "softstart" don't do as much harm to the powerjets.

I for sure wouldn't use that with your Seo's.. MaxiJets seem to hold up pretty good to the constant start/stop.. But Seo's do not. Thats probably the biggest problem with Seo's is when they get old they wont start. I've got a couple that I have to spin them by hand sometimes to get them going.. A prop pump like the Koralia's also aren't very good on wavemakers. The way a Koralia works is that if the prop starts the wrong direction it lifts up breaks the connection then drops back down. They seem to be great pumps but I would not want them kicking on and off every 20 mins I dont think they would last long..

I have the Seio Controller works like magic. It only slows the powerheads down %50 and then then it ramps them back up. this way less wear on them and they never have to completely stop. I have two 1500 in my 90 they get full coverage, with a nice wavy flow. You have to have the larger seios for the controller like 1100, 1500, and 2600 series. They don't recommend it for the smaller ones.
