So yesterday was going to go out and buy a couple clowns and ended up getting an anemone instead. I saw a white anemone that I thought looked too pretty to pass up.

It seemed happy health and looked better to me than the dull pink/ brown one and the tiny blue one at petco so I got it. The base is very pink and the tentacles are white with bright white almost fluorescent hint of green on the tips.

After going online to read about feeding etc I saw people saying that if it's white it's bleached unhealthy and going to die...
If this is the case , which I hope not as I like the color and other than that I would think it was healthy...

What do I do to know if it is in fact bleached or if it's the natural color?

Also what are you feeding your bubble tips

If it is bleached how do I know if it's in too much light or too little .


I got him last night and he hasn't moved from his rock so I assume he's happy where he at

second, since I have never heard of a white BTA, I would have to presume you purchased a bleach BTA. what color it will turn out, I can not say but if you bought from Petco (and paid around $20-25) I would think green would likely be its "healthy" true color.

As for "what to do now" as would say...do nothing

allow the nem some time to acclimate itself to both your water conditions and your lighting. do not be alarmed if it decides to hide as this is just it's way of acclimating itself. personally I would not attempt to feed it anything for a week or so and if and when I did, I would only feed small offerings of mysis shrimp or the like. I would not feed large chunks of anything imo.

give it some time, but in the meantime, please post some pix and let us know your current water parameters as well as your type of lighting. this will help most of us to help you.

he just went in my tank last night.

i tested everything last week. i cant find the paper i wrote it down on, i know 0 nitrates 0 nitrites. ph 8 , ammonia 0 , phosphate had a reading but was almost 0. mag and cal were a little low but waiting to dose after taking readings today after i do a wc. spec grav 1.024

my lights are t5 high output. 4 bulbs

i tried squirting a bit of fish flakes at him earlier this morning, before you told me not to feed hin , cant tell if he ate them or not...

Im going to the LFS today and want to get something to feed him for the future, what do you suggest. esp if i may be rehabbing him.

I hear theyll eat thawed tilapia or scallps from walmart?

Also should i be waiting to get clowns to host in it? or will they help it by bringing it food?
 
Def a bleached anemone but as long as your tank is stable it can recover.

Just let it settle in.

What size tank and what kinda pumps?
 
Is it bad that it hasn't moved around to find a spot at all? When should I feed it and how do I know if it has too much light or too little ? I heard btas don't need as much light as other nems. Also when should I add my clowns?
 
unfortunately you appear to have a bleached bta :(
the good thing is that it can be reversed...the best chance however is to be sure you have good water quality.
you should test your water parameters again (today) and insure the qualty stays good constantly. Water changes with RODI water and a quality salt should help maintain that.
I would give it a few days to a week to settle into a spot it likes and then start feedings.
I would purchase frozen mysis shrimp from your LFS, rinse with fresh water to thaw it out and offer small amounts 3-4X a week.
If you want to purchase uncooked/raw shrimp from the grocery store, you could do the same....rinse with freshwater to thaw and then offer it small chopped pieces 3-4X a week...

as for your lighting, can you please be more specific? what fixture and wattage bulbs? how high above the tank are the T5s?
 
It's an odyssea t5 highoutput. 10,000k 96 watts.
My corals are growing really well. The nem is on a lower rock right now , the one he came on from the store, and hasnt moved any higher.
The t5s are right over the tank like an inch off the water

Set up Is 3 months old no sump/ skimmer just doing very reg wcs, Hob filter has a carbon / mesh media and a spongy type media as well.
 
Can you take him back? Might not be a bad idea. it's severely bleached and may recover depending on whether or not he settles in and you can get him eating. I'd recommend small pieces of mysis or fresh shrimp from the grocery store cut into tiny pieces (pellet size). Your tank is also relatively new at only 3 months. I usually recommend waiting 6 months to a year for an anemone. Whatever you decide, good luck and keep us updated!

IMO...yes, you should bring it back, assuming they will let you. Unfortunately I do not personally feel your set-up is established enough for a healthy nem let alone an unhealthy one.
When you have a protein skimmer (like a HOB style) on your tank and maintain quality water conditions for 6 months or more, then I would consider a healthy nem at that time.

I would also seek out a reputable LFS in lieu of a Petco and seek someone with a good knowledge base of our hobby (someone who will ask you about your system and it's livestock to assure your success) to assist you in future purchases.

again, this is only my opinion and what you decide to do is, of course, up to you.

They'll let me bring it back for a full refund he said. I explained I googled and slot of sources say if it's white it's bleached he acted like he wasn't sure if what I was saying was accurate but said I could bring it back
