Web Site for Tucson Reefers

Hey all I've noticed many clubs have their own websites here in the club forums. I've also noticed many Wed Developers floating around this and the PHX club. Has anyone ever thought about putting a formal club site together? I know it looks like a small group but my thoughts are not everyone knows about RC and we may be able to get the stores to be listed as sponsors and donate for the Swaps and have the stores post a poster about a local club. Just a thought...

I've been looking into the MASNA site and it seems very simple to get a structured club together. If you would like to see a structured club with a Board of Directors, Annual Dues and Sponsorship and possible guest speakers please put your name on this thread and I will continue to do some homework.

A formal club has been tried a couple times, but nothing has really worked out. Most of the reefers in the area seem to like to get together a few times a year and trade their stuff, but an organized club has never really worked. Low membership is usually the problem as there aren't many reefers who are willing to come once a month to a meeting. I have always thought a little more structure would be a good thing, but the problem is that we need someone who is willing to put in the time and effort to do it right. Most clubs have very experienced reefers at the top and people come to learn and get things from them. One problem is that there just aren't that many of those kind of people around. When Scott was more active he was a good person, Vince is another very experienced reefer, Zoakeeper and Adamsky are a couple more. If you could get Vince, Adam, Dave and Scott going it would probably be a successful thing. But I know Scott was a member of a club a few years back and what ended up happening is it was the same half dozen guys at every meeting. A large membership would be the first priority and what attracts people to the meets is cheap coral. There just aren't enough people who can frag their stuff often to support a large number of members. 10 experienced members who could frag stuff often would allow enough coral to be brought to meetings to attract people, but there aren't that many. Dave/Adam, Scott and I are the only serious SPS keepers and Vince has us all beat, but he owns a store, so he isn't going to sell his stuff super cheap as he is looking to make a little profit. Scott tore down his 110 and now has a tiny SPS nano, it has amazing growth and color, but it just couldn't be fragged super often. Adam/dave have a 110 that has some huge stuff, but it would be spread around quickly and then nobody would come for their stuff. My SPS are all too small to be fragged often, so you just don't have enough experienced reefers to support a club. The majority of a club is going to be inexperienced, so you need a good strong leadership to guide them and give them incentive to come (cheap coral).

Spoke with Vince this morning, he does have some really nice corals and is in the process of moving all of it to his greenhouse and his home display.

Anyways he is supper busy with expanding his coffee house into 2 new locations, but once he has them managed he says he is willing to help make a formal club. I offered my services for web-design when the time comes as well.

He did mention another club but said not to mention it here as there has been some troubles with some of those members and RC.

It would be nice to form a local club, but as Matt has stated, the support has not been strong enough.

ACRO spun off from this site and did exactly that, with a website and everything. I am not a part of it, but curious to know if it is still up and running and well attended. If, so, that may be the place for people to go.

I suggest that we group together and attend the Phoenix FRAG events every other month or so. Their events are well supported, and attended. Their is also a lot of diversity of coral in that arena and will meet the immediate needs of many people here without all the hoopla of organizing our own club.

Again, I want to emphasize what I have learned over the years with setting up a club, is that coral for sale is what motivates people. Discussions and speakers are a nice supplement but they will not carry the club into a successful oprganization. If you take the swap away from the Phoenix FRAG, people will stop attending.

The FRAG attendance is over 50 people per event.

Cheers

I will say that ACRO is still up and running strongly, there are monthly meetings with anywhere from a half dozen people to 15+ depending on the month and who is available.
