So I am looking to retire my sherwood scuba BC after close to 20 years of service (well, its 20 years old, not 20 yrs of logged dives, lol) and I'm looking into a new bc. I have a weight belt but I rented a BC with the weights integrated into it. Still on the fence on this one....whad do you guys use?

p.s. the bladder on the sherwood is unfixable according to a local dive shop.

zeagle. the end all of the BC's. and weight integrated is the only way to fly.

if you are looking for a light wieght travel, may i suggest the scout.
if you are looking to do semi tech, may i suggest the ranger
if you are tech, you all ready know about the zeagle Tech
if you you want the newest and possible the best may i recommend the Stiletto.

these guys are a home grown builders who have built some of the tougest longest lasting bc's on the planet. they also have lifetime warranty on the bladders. I dive the scout and the ranger depending on what i am doing where.

I do agree that zeagle makes a great BC...

I also like several of the other brands also... It really depends on how much you can afford... I don't think going the cheapest is what I would do but there are other brands that are very good and priced right!!

I personally have the Sherwood Avid...I really like it for most recreational diving... it is a medium priced bc and fits me very comfortably!!!

Ron L, you're a diving / forum posting phenomenon!! lol

thanks for the info. Yea im somewhat loyal to sherwood as well.

LOL.... Sounds like I made infamous status!!! LOL...

I do like the Sherwood line in general...I have the Maximus regulator from Sherwood also....

I lived in the Marshall Islands for three years and dove a lot. The Zeagle Ranger and Sherwood reg set (Blizzard) was my choice setup.

Zeagle? the end all? hmmm I would have to disagree with that but I agree that they are pretty good quality. I do NOT like their design though. I know many people who use the Sherwood Avid (pretty inexpensive at the local giant sporting good chain) I know several people who like the Scuba Pro Knight Hawk, same for the dive rite transpac (if I decided to do recreational only and couldnt use my back plate I would pick this) and I use a back plate with wings which I feel is the be all end all of BCs. The stainless steel back plate weights ~5lbs ( dispersed over your lungs not hanging from your weight belt) never wears out or has stitching break, modular wings so you can get an air cell big enough for double steel tanks with a dry suit or a smaller wing super aerodynamic for tropic diving with no wetsuit. The harness is simple 2" nylon webbing that is indestructible but if it fades from the sun or you decide you just want a different color harness it costs about $20 to replace. There is no diving you can not do with a back plate and wing, its totally modular, and having the air in the bc behind your back will help keep you horizontal while in the water so you don't plow through the water while you swim. It may take a little while getting your back plate properly adjusted (the first time) but once its dialed in, no other type of bc is as stable.
re: weight integrated, its all the rage, Ive known people who lost a weight pocket while diving and had to sit out the rest of dive because they had no where to put weight. If you ever try to take a DM class you probably wont like them when it comes time to remove your gear underwater and swap with a team mate. With a weight belt, you still have weight keeping you down, with weight integrated when you remove your bc you remove your ballast...
you can also easily move your weight belt up and down your body to perfect you center of gravity so again you dont go swimming around with you fins pointing to the silty bottom. Most dive bags dont like the pouches of weights stuck inside while transporting gear, if its a weight belt, throw it over your shoulder or just wear it. What happens if you're out on a boat enjoy a dive, get back on board as a whale starts swimming around your boat, with a weight integrated you wear everything, if its a weight belt, grab your mask and snorkle (if you have a snorkle) and have fun with the wildlife.

Thanks for the info all!

True statement, I keep mask / snorkel / fins / shorty wet suit in the jeep at all times =) well, untill its 20 degrees out then i have to break out the dry suit.

I have been a DM and instructor both store affiliated and independent for years. Diving fresh and salt, diveskin, wetsuit, dry suit. There are a lot of manufacturers and equipment out there that will work. The trick is to find the one you're willing to spend your money on. Rent from a few diferent places and try them out or ask if they have one you can test dive. The mark of a quality store is one that will go the extra measure to get you equipment that is suited for your diving, fitted to you, that is capable of being maintained locally, and that you are knowledgeable in its operation . When you find that, whether its Zeagle, Dive Rite, Sherwood, whatever, buy it.

I have the Zeagle Ranger and love it! I hate weight belts. Bought my Ranger used from a local dive master and it has been very good to me thus far.

I was sold on the Zeagle Ranger from the LDS I got my cert from. Good product but as soon as I tried the Transpac, I switched. The main reason? Adjustment and buoyancy. I needed less lead with the Transpac since it was not as buoyant as the Ranger.

I haven't tried the Transpac, if I ever get tired of my Ranger I will give it a shot. Thanks for the info!
