WELD-ON #16 Question

I bought a used acrylic tank that I intend to use as a sump. It is a TRU-VU and about 10 years old.

My question is: Can I run a bead of weld-on throughout the inside of the tank to add strength?

I know normally you use weld-on to "weld" two adjoining pieces acrylic. Will it help at all to run a bead of weld-on similar to running a bead of silicon along the inside seams of the tank?

Thanks!!!

PS - I do intend to add some baffels which will add some strength too. However I am more interested in making sure the seams do not come undone.

Thanks again.

#16 won't really add any "strength" per se. It's good for those seams where there might be too many bubbles and cause possible leaks in the future. It acts as an additional layer on top of the acrylic. If you are looking for additional strength so that the sides won't bow, then the baffles will definitely help and reduce the stress on the seams.

You definately can and I don't know how much strength is gonna give but at least you can seal the old bonds starting open up if appearance is not an issue I would do it.

If you thin the 16 with a little #3or #4, you can use a squeeze bottle to add a nice smooth bead to the inside. Put some 16 in the bottle then add the 3, and shake to mix. Tilt the tank so one of the side seams is down, but angled up a little. As you start the application, you will see the cement flow down the seam.. As it gets to the bottom, tilt it up and let it run back to the top. Let it sit for a short time to set up. Start another coat on the same seam but let it go to a bottom joint. Repat for all seams. Allow to sit overnight, then repeat the next day. You will end up with a smooth fillet in the joints that you can't get with 16 alone. My neighbor is a acrylic fabricator and he taught me the trick,

does home depot carry weld on? i couldn't find it at lowe's or osh.

Like Loc said, look in your local plastics store. HD, Lowes, nor OSH has this stuff. Check in the Yellow Pages under Plastics. I picked up a 1.5 oz tube for $1.75 at S&W Plastics in Montclair six or so months ago. They are pretty cheap.
