Weld-On Alternatives

Some websites carry off brand solvents. They all have methylene chloride as the main ingredient. Does it matter if an off brand is used?

I can't say for sure, but probably not. Just like "SuperGlue" is the most commonly recognized name for CA glue, I can't believe it would make a difference.

only by comparing the datasheets for each can an answer be given..

You should have given the make/model of this "off brand" adhesive.

IPS weldon is now Scigrip (weldon) too..

I found a bottle of "Plasti-Weld" at Hobby Lobby in their model section. Says it adheres acrylic. Tried it on my DIY overflow box and worked well. Cheaper than buying Weld-On online. Came in a protective case, so you know it has to be good!

Best i could find is its mostly Dichloromethane with about 10% MEK.

Weldon 4 is about half and half Dichloromethane and Trichloroethylene.
Weldon 3 is more similar with mostly Dichloromethane and about 10% Dimethyl Glutarate.

So its probably pretty quick stuff... I don't know what the other thing in #3 is, but MEK can also be used as a solvent for acrylic.

You could technically use PVC cement too. I've used it to fix a cross brace on a 55 gallon before. Slathered up an underbrace of acrylic with cement and clamped it on. Held like a champ. I wouldn't recommend it for building new stuff, but it does work.

Only problem with pvc cement is it has pvc in it. I think clear primer would be a better choice in that case, as primer is an identical solvent (Tetrahydrofuran, MEK, Acetone, Cyclohexanone), without the pvc. Price wise i think a jug of MEK is cheaper (and also available) than primer in the box stores. Its usually in the cleaner/thinner isle instead of near pvc stuff though.
