Well Water

I am new to area and I am in the process of setting up a 120 gallon reef tank. The house I bought had a sprinkler system but the pump was not functional (deep well). I got a new pump and replumbed the system and now I have a working sprinkler system - which is great.

I was also excited because now I could hook up an ro/di system to the well pump for use with the aquarium. However, I am concerned because the water from the well smells very swampy. Would I be better off hooking the ro/di up to city water? or will the ro/di unit clean the water from the well thorough enough for use in the aquarium? Anyone have experience using well water and an ro/di system?

Thanks.
Shawn

All I can tell you is I am on a well. My water has a high sulfer and iron content. After going through the ro/di, it is fine. I recently started to have some cyano, but that is due to the fact my prefilters were overdue to be replaced. It never hurts to have your well water tested for bacteria or chemicals though. You would be amazed with the number of industrial chemicals that have been leaching into well water across the country.

i want to do the same thing, but I am not sure. I just got a new well pump too. The swamp smell is sulfur. I have been told that city water is just well water filtered and chlorine added

Make sure you have the right membrane..

Make sure you have the right membrane..

Check to make sure you have the right membrane for well water. I can't remember which is which, but call aqua fx or any water place and I'm sure they can help.

Yes ,

If your going to use the well water you might want to aerate the water first. :) that will get rid of the sulfa smell or swampy smell, then run it threw the di/ro :)
