Yeah, I'm getting them left and right. Its ridiculous that ReefCentral charges a $25 annual membership and gobs for all its sponsors yet can't keep up with the bandwidth demands. Its just dumb. I wish MARS used a different forum than RC.

You may say that no offense was intended, but it's kinda hard to write that without people getting offended. Can of worms and all.
We don't know what your P and L looks like, you're right. The visable stability of reefcentral is pretty spotty "at times". In the age of ubiquitous information ontap 24x7 and three/five/seven nines of reliability people's expectations of a sponsor supported message forum "may" be too high.
I'd pay for five nines and a usable search feature.

I would think that this is a database performance problem (mysql) -- which is only resolved by additional hardware and/or clustering. A website with this much activity would probably require tens of thousands of dollars to upgrade in this manner.
I don't think yearly dues + advertising income would cover this expense -- and that is not considering the time involved to do this upgrade.

There are plenty of software programs for bulletin boards that have usable search functions and don't require any payments from members.
The MARS part of RC doesn't require any significant amount of bandwidth, so it could be hosted just about anywhere for virtually no cost-certainly not as much money as a few local ads would generate.

As others have mentioned, I've been on much larger forums running the same software and not experienced the all too common instability we all experience at RC.
Pete, you are dreaming if you expect 5 9s. I'd be hardpressed to believe RC breaks 2.
M&M, check out pbnation. It is almost twice the size of RC and offers plenty of bandwidth (no search function for non-paying memebers), yet pbnation does not even have a sponsors section. I do use the google search, but the returned threads are just a fraction of what actually exist on RC (nor current).

I also agree with Bored4long 100% wheather he knows what he is talking about or not
. The board makes plenty of money and then some. About $300K alone in sponsors. Servers aren't that much then add in all the premium memberships.

I don't know what 5's & 9's are... And my Sorry bonks aren't just on searches. Not trying to anger the RC gods, just wondering what's going on.

By the way Mark its ok if Admin or Mods are rude. just the rest of us have to follow the rules.
I could have sworn it was a Admin just about a month ago that said just be good to people and respectful and you wont have any problems? I guess this isn't a lead by example board?

Well i just recounted and its 86 sponsors so i was wrong so its $430K a year on sponsors alone

Well, Beerguy is right that we don't know what goes on behind the scenes, nor necessarily what is needed to "fix" the problems, but I have noticed the last couple of days I have gotten an awful lot more "sorry" messages, and that has not even been regarding the search-ability of RC. Just trying to navigate pages.
Also, I would expect that if your job was to police every post made by those on RC, you may be a tad rude in some of your responses as well. I know I would after reading some people's posts. In short, I commend you Beerguy, and the rest of the staff, but would love any information on any current issues and planned upgrading of RC. I've been wanting to ask lately if RC was planning to "upgrade" the system, because it has been a bit frustrating lately.

I was beginning to think it was only me, but I see that I am not the only one experiencing trouble using the site in general, let alone the searches. Pretty much everything I click returns the 'sorry' message at least the first time, if not the first several times. On the plus side, I generally get to where I was going, eventually. I just keep thinking something is wrong with my wireless or my internet connection...
Also, can we all just be a little more polite? In general we all do pretty well, but I know that for me, when someone comes off as being rude in their post or reply, I pretty much stop reading what they write. There is too much other good stuff to read and too many other nice people to chat with.
