wet/dry filter setup

I am using a wet/dry filter. really using it more as a sump since I have no bio balls in there.
But I have heard that the large sponge/filter that goes between the filter reservoir and the return reservoir is a magnet for nitrates. Is this true? Should I remove that as well?

Kevin,

With proper cleaning and maintainance it shouldn't be a problem. Many of us use filter socks etc. that have a similar effect.
