It is still very useful for this purpose because in QT for fish you don't care about nitrate accumulation. Your objectives are oxygenation and nitrification in QT, for these the wet-dry truthly excels.
DIY wet-dry is very easy and easy to do well. You don't need to buy a "wet-dry filter" for this purpose. Wet-dry is a setup concept, not a device.
i use a wet dry for reef no bio balls in it just filter pad and filter media it exposes water to air whats old school about that a sump water dumps in it and is pumped out no air and water contact rather have wet dry my tank does very well
No, a canister filter generally uses submerged filter medium.
Imagine extremely heavy rain falling onto a medium. Times two or three in terms of flow. This is easy to set up. Just pump water into a shallow tray with holes and then drip onto the medium.
A quick virtual wet-dry is just to allow water out of a hose to cascade dawn bagfuls or ballfulls of medium stacked high.
yes you can, no need for a sump, although id never own a reef tank without 1, a wet dry is a very good filter for a qt or a fish only tank and does its job very well, if your aiming to own a reef tank however id suggest a sump instead for sure, much easier to keep clean and more useful as well in my opinion.
A wet-dry setup is not necessay for QT, but is the optimal.
I like the container within container setup for wet-dry.
A small capacity but tall container (garbage can) is designed to be placed into a larger shallower container. A hole is drilled onto the side very near the bottom of the small and tall container. You stack bagfuls of crushed coral into the small tall containter and place it inside the large container. A powerhead or pump is placed into the larger container and a hose is attached. Water is pumped and cascades down inside the tall container. It is better to elevate the small container with any flat and inert things, as four small cups of the same size.
